The Little Polynesian Mermaid

Chapter 7: Wait here.

The depth of the water became more shallow as the sky started to turn dark, Nami and Miya had reached the cliff side just about 50 meters away from the shoreline in front of Namis house, but Miya held back from swimming any closer, feeling Miyas hesitation Nami turns around to look at her.

"Whats wrong?"

"Cant you hear it?"

"What?"

"Listen carefully"

Nami peered her eyes along the surface of the cold water, she heard something, someone. It was someone talking on a megaphone, she could hear voices but the speech was inaudible, they were too far to hear. she swam a little further closer to where the sound was coming from, and she saw lights, red and blue blinking lights and the sound of a motor.

"Its the coast guard"

"I'm scared Nami"

"Don't be, Jamie must have sent for them to look for me, I've been gone most of the day"

"I don't want to get closer"

"Okay, stay here a while"

"Where are you going?

"I'm going to find Jamie"

Miya reached for Namis hand and held tight.

"Don't leave me"

"I wont, I promise I'll come back. . .just. Wait here"

"Alone?"

"Yes, I promise i'll come back for you"

As she removed Miyas hand from hers, Miya held herself in fear, visible only from the shoulders up. seeing this, the fear Miya had in her eyes, she returned to Miya and held her close, it was the best she could do at the moment. she didn't want to leave her, but she also didn't want Jamie to worry any longer.

"Promise you'll come back?"

"I promise!"

"Don't leave me like the others have Nami"

She paused to listen.

"I...I don't want to be alone anymore" Miya said, tears welling up in her eyes, her voice broken. the familiar fear of being abandoned returned again.

"You wont be alone anymore. You have Me now" Nami shouted to Miya and turned toward the lights and paddled furiously.

Miya found herself alone again, the winds were loud and the waves louder, pushing her against the large, slick rocks on the cliff side and thought.

"She WILL come back, this time, this one wont leave, Nami will come back. she promised"

And she went down into the water, submerging herself completely, hiding from the bright lights and muffled voices and held herself tight.

Nami paddled harder and faster, but instead of moving towards the boat, she went closer to the shore, her instinct told her that her twin would be there sitting on the shore waiting for her to show up.

if they found anything, he'd rather not be there. if they found her dead, he would have the option to not see it at all,it would be too much, if she were alive then-

Jamie's thoughts cut off, he saw something, in the water, coming closer to the shore, he quickly stood up, something in him told him it would be his sister but he wasn't so sure.

"Nami?" he said under his breath. frozen where he stood a few hundred feet away from the water, it was too dark, and the fire he lit next to him wasn't really helping except keeping him warm from the cold, soft, salty breeze.

Nami reached the shallow waters of the shore. picked up her board and started walking, she could see the tall statuesque figure of her brother, it was Jamie alright, and as she came closer, she could see all of his features in the light of the flame.

Jamie stood a towering 6'2 over her own 5'5, he had smooth and shiny tan skin, a manly build with sculpted muscles from all his surfing, diving and working at the Park doing all sorts of heavy lifting, he had large hands, brown radiant eyes, thick brown short hair. he wore his fathers beaded shell necklace that hugged against his neck. he also wore a plain white tank and green beach shorts, he had a large tribal tattoo of a shark with waves in black on the left side of his body spreading through his left arm, He also had tattooed the names of his parents on his right wrist, Mae A'a and Jamie, and his sisters name Nami on his left wrist with a wave decoration. Nami could cry, she dropped her board and bolted for Jamie still frozen in his place. Jamie recognized her now but stayed where he was, unsure if he was hallucinating or not. then he heard her yell.

"JAMIE!!"

and felt her hard against his chest, he hugged his sister, pushed her away, then slapped her hard across the face.

It was like a loud clap of thunder and lightning, she held her face. then looked at him, she saw tears in his eyes.

"Don't you ever, EVER! make me worry like that again!!" he said in a stern tone, no breaking in his voice but let the tears fall as he grabbed his sister on the shoulders and heard her say.

"have you done the dishes yet?"

they both laughed aloud but Jamie laughed with tears.

"Lets go home Jamie" said Nami as she tugged him towards the house.

Miya was startled by something, she took a deep breath as she touched her face and felt pain.

"something must have happened to Nami, but I'm not going anywhere, she told me to wait."

and Miya slowly felt the pain fade away, and felt like she was being forgotten.

"whatever happens,I'm going to wait here".
