For more than 50 years, people have reported seeing a mermaid off the coast of Hawaii's Big Island. But the sightings were never taken seriously, locals named it The Kaiwi point Mermaid.
but there it was,in front of Nami, an actual, living, breathing, mermaid. she and her brother Jamie would often hear stories from their mother about it when they were kids. and based on what their mother had told in her stories, the description fit. She couldn't believe it. Jamie would be going nuts with a combination of excitement and fear, their mother would have loved to see her, her friends would throw a party but the entire island would go insane to come and see, The Kaiwi point mermaid that was always in the stories.
or worse, some scientists would most likely come and take her away and do strange, horrible things to her if they found out about her, and Nami for some reason felt and indescribable bond with "it" and a need to protect her. it was like how a mother felt about her baby, although nami wouldn't know anything about That. despite the fact she and her boyfriend of 4 years Angel had talked about having a baby. she always said a baby would get in the way of her surfing. her thoughts drifted, blankly staring at the Mermaid.
"you think I'm hideous don't you?" the mermaid said in a low,sad tone.
Nami hadn't found the words to say to her, all this time she thought mermaids were the stuff of fairy tales.
"No." she said abruptly and added "you're absolutely Beautiful" in a proud, decisive tone.
"you mean that!?" said the mermaid in an excited voice.
"Y-yes, I. Do"
in a split second the mermaid pulled the board towards her, sending Nami sliding down on the board onto the soft sandy shore but the mermaid caught her in a huge embrace. the mermaids skin was curiously warm for someone who was always in the water. to Nami the embrace was like the way her friends would hug her when they haven't seen each other for a long period of time. Inexplicably, the embrace felt like being at Home for both of them, like finding their other half, not in a romantic way, but a happy "i feel complete" moment.
The mermaid could feel her new friend returning the embrace with sincerity, then abruptly pushes her away and says.
"A Name! "
"huh?"
"A Name! Id like a name Nami!"
"You don't have one?"
"...No, there's No one to give me a name"
"what about your mother?"
"Mother?"
". . .where you come from. . .no, i mean, who you came from"
"who i came from? a mother? . . . The big White Moon! Its my mother!"
"the moon?? how?"
"i don't know! i feel strange whenever it shows up in the big Sea in the Sky"
Nami didn't know what to make with that answer, but neither could she with the mermaid in front of her.
their faces met with a point blank eye to eye stare.
"Have you thought of one yet??" she asked with a large toothy grin.
Nami looked at her smile and it reminded her of her mothers smile.
"Mae A'a- the adventurer" (Mee-Yah-ah) >>sounds weird? its hawaiian, don't complain haha<<
"Mae a'a" the mermaid repeated.
"Miya for short" Nami added."it was my mothers name"
"..."
"you don't like it?"
". . i do! I've heard it before, I've met someone before with the same name, she was nice to me too, but she didn't come back after a while, she might not have liked me after all"
"oh? so I'm not the first one to see her" Nami thought. and wondered if the woman the mermaid met was her mother, but dismissed the idea because the mermaid looked very young, close to her own age. Nami was 21 the mermaid looked like 19-20.
"Mae a'a! i love it!"
"Locally, you're known as The Kaiwi point mermaid"
"i am? why?"
"because that's where you were always seen...for 50 years. . .by the way,how old are you?"
"I'm not sure. . . I've seen the moon in the sky 684 times. . .does that mean I'm 684 years old?"
"wow, that's a long time. . .uhm, no. . it would mean your. . .57 years old. . ."
"57? hahaha that's very young!"
"not in human years"
"I've been alone for a long time, another one like me left a long time ago"
"so there's more than one"
"yes. but i haven't seen her since she got angry at me for wanting to go ashore, she left when i made friends with the first Mae a'a"
Nami thought of her mother. "it must have been mom"...
Mae a'a looked into her eyes and saw thoughts of her mother and asked with politeness.
"can i go home with you?"
and without thinking it through, Nami answered her.
"Yes, miya, you're going home with me"
