Chapter 3

"That was really weird," Ronnie said as she sat back down at her table.

"What?" Kara asked, sounding interested.

"Josh wants me to pretend that we dated in high school. Mia, his fiancée, seems to think we did. I just covered for him."

"Are you sure you didn't misunderstand?" Maggie asked. Ronnie just glared at her.

"I'm positive I wasn't mistaken," she explained.

"So what are you going to do?" Kristy inquired.

"I guess I'll go along with it for now, anyway. The poor guy looked beside himself when I gave him a hard time about it."

"Ah, I see what this is, Ron. You still have a soft spot in your heart for him after you found out that he had a thing for you freshman year," Kara deduced.

She was somewhat right. Josh had loved Ronnie their freshman year. She'd spent the summer after contemplating whether she should date him or not, but then she met Austin Salinger. All thoughts of Josh disappeared in an instant. Knowing what she knew now, she shouldn't have wasted her time with Austin. Then again, wasn't hindsight always 20/20?

"Nah. That's not ........ completely ..... true."

"But it's a little bit true?" Kara quickly responded.

"Yeah. You know me. I'm a sucker for guys who find me the least bit attractive. And he was kind of cute, in that pathetic sort of way."

"Aren't you glad you dodged that bullet?" Maggie asked.

Ronnie thought about it for a second, then answered half-heartedly, "Yeah, I guess I am."

"They are definitely staring over here this time. At least now we know why. Josh's pretend ex-girlfriend is sitting at our table," Kristy chuckled.

"Stuff it," Ronnie joked.

"Won't the rest of our class know that you two didn't date? How is that going to work?" Kara asked.

"I was wondering the same thing. Maybe we were secret lovers. After all, what would Jemma Watson have done to both of us if she'd known? She was slightly obsessed with Josh for a long time," Ronnie reasoned.

"She used to get all mad when he would write 'I love Ronica VERi much' all over your notebooks," Maggie stated.

Ronnie laughed, "Yeah, I almost forgot about that." Jemma and Josh had been friends in middle school. When the two middle schools in their district merged into the high school freshman year, they had both instantly befriended Ronnie. The three of them had some pretty good times together. Jemma was interested in being more than Josh's friend, though. That was another reason why Ronnie never acted on Josh's feelings for her.

She was currently friends with Jemma on Facebook, but didn't talk to her otherwise. She looked around the room to see if Jemma had shown up. It didn't take long to see her sitting a few tables over. She was here with her boyfriend, Daniel, Karen Lonkert, and Karen's husband, Michael. Thanks to Facebook, she recognized all of them. Ronnie only hoped word wouldn't get back to Jemma and Karen about her "relationship" with Josh. If it did, she guessed the best that could happen might be a Facebook defriending.
