Chapter 6
Ronnie could not believe she was going through with this ridiculousness. Josh owed her one after all of this. She was standing in front of his door, breakfast in hand. Here goes nothing, she thought, knocking on the door.
The door opened, and there he was, in the doorway.
"Hey," he said, "how's it going?"
"Brought you some breakfast, in case you were hungry," she offered, looking at him apologetically.
He took it from her and motioned for her to come inside. "Thanks. I actually was hungry. I would have come down, but Mia begged me to stay up here and wait for you."
Ronnie felt weird. What was going to happen now? She stood there inside the doorway, watching Josh eat his breakfast.
"Come sit down," Josh said, motioning to the couch in the room. She sat on the edge of the sofa.
"Don't look so relaxed," Josh joked. "Seriously, Ron, take a chill pill. I'm not going to rape you. You don't even have to touch me. I know how weird you are about not knowing what comes next. We were in science class, together. Remember?"
She did remember. She had spent the last eighteen hours or so trying to remember everything she knew about Josh, along with every encounter the two of them had ever shared. There were more instances than she thought. I guess time will do that to a person, she thought.
"I know what you're talking about," she smiled, recalling a distant memory.
She still didn't get it. What could they do for seven hours? Only fifteen minutes had passed, and it felt like fifteen years.
"So what now?" Ronnie asked.
"I guess we talk."
"What did you do during special time with the others? How many others were there?"
"There were four others, and we talked, mostly."
"That's it? You just talked? I'm okay with talking, even if the whole thing is still a little awkward," she exclaimed.
"Well, I might have kissed them, too. I made out with one a little," he explained, smiling at the horrified look appearing on Ronnie's face.
"I don't want to kiss you. You're getting married in two days." She stood up and headed for the door.
"You don't have to kiss me. Sheesh. A guy could develop a complex hanging out with you, how you run away at the mention of a kiss. Please come back. I haven't seen you in twenty years. You can't spend the next twenty thinking I'm some kind of swinger."
She sat back down and laughed. "I've gotta hand it to you. You are pretty funny when you want to be."
"Let's take a walk around. I do pilot cruise ships for a living. I happen to know a thing or two about this old girl," he said, referring to the boat.
Ronnie's blood pressure began to return to normal as she walked with Josh around the boat. He took her up to the highest deck. There were only three or four people up there at such an early hour. They sat on deck chairs and watched the ocean pass them by.
She didn't know why kissing him scared her so much. She had kissed plenty of guys in her life. She certainly didn't think he'd suddenly fall in love with her and leave Mia. She figured it might be that, if, after all these years, Josh had been thinking that kissing her would be wonderful and it turned out to be horrible, that she would be mortified. She'd never gotten any complaints before, but she hadn't felt pressured to perform, either.
