Chapter 7
The two of them sat in silence for a few minutes, trying their best not to make eye contact with one another.
"Can I ask you something?" Ronnie blurted out.
"Of course," Josh replied.
"What would have happened next? Anything? When we were holding hands up there before Mia ru.....before Mia texted you. What would have been next?"
Josh looked stunned. With a trace of a smile he said, "I don't know. I was pretty surprised you let me touch you at all."
"I was pretty surprised I let you touch me, too. It wasn't half bad," she said.
Josh smiled. "You liked it?"
"I said it wasn't half bad," she began to explain. "I didn't say I...."
"But with you, that means you liked it. I know your code. Don't forget, I studied you in high school as much as I studied academics."
I should have dated you when I had the chance, she thought. No guy had ever even tried to figure her out. They just gave up on her and eventually walked away. Twenty-two years after their last conversation, and this one still knew her.
"Guilty as charged," she said, eyes downcast. "But you never did answer my question."
Josh was staring at her, and this time she wasn't the least bit creeped out.
"Well, for starters, that kiss might have had bad timing, but I would have wanted it to happen eventually, witness or no witness."
"I thought it was for show," Ronnie said.
"I am not that good of an actor. That was real on my part. Were you acting?" he asked.
Ronnie laughed. "I can't act on a good day, let alone when I'm trying my best not to maul a guy while his bride-to-be looks on."
"That was an awesome kiss," Josh recalled fondly.
"We can't do it again," Ronnie stated vehemently, getting up and heading for the door.
"Why not?" Josh asked, worry in his voice.
"I know this is our 'special time' and all, but adultery is not my cup of tea," she explained.
Josh walked over to where she was standing. He positioned himself between Ronnie and the exit, getting a little closer than necessary to her. "She wants us to explore our feelings for each other," he said, taking her hands in his.
She didn't pull back. Instead, she gently returned the squeeze. She knew she had to get out that door, but her feet wouldn't listen. He was moving his face closer to hers.
"If I don't kiss you now, I might not be able to marry Mia," he teased.
"When you put it like that, who am I to stand in the way of your happiness?" she asked, leaning in toward him.
She knew it wasn't completely ethical, but these two had practically forced her into this situation. She could leave, should leave right now, but she'd hidden all those years ago from him. She didn't think it would turn out so well if she gave a repeat performance.
His lips found hers, and this time, there was no holding back. She couldn't get enough of him. Their hands were wildly searching for unchartered parts of each other. Kissing wasn't going to be enough.
His clumsy fingers found her bra just as she reached for the button on his pants. Somewhere along the line, both of them ended up shirtless. She thought she'd lose it right there. Having her chest against his was almost enough to make her eyes roll back in her head. She had never experienced anything this intense before.
It only took a second for him to stop and reach for a condom in the nightstand drawer, but in that time, she gained a trace of sanity. There was no way she could have sex with an almost married man, special time or not.
"I really can't do this," she said as she stood up and gathered her discarded clothing. "This is not who I am."
"You don't want to?" Josh asked longingly.
"Of course I want to," she responded. "It's taking every ounce of will power I have not to come over there and finish what we started, but it's wrong. This is not my place."
With that, she left the room, stopping outside the door to throw her clothes back on before running back to her room.
