Chapter 6 - Ben

Everything I've been working for has been shattered. In an instant, all of the plans, the resources, maybe even the people, have been thrown in the fire. I thought we had been careful enough; everyone in the resistance had been someone me or Morgan had known for a long time.

Morgan. Is he okay? He hadn't even crossed my mind. How could I forget him, he's been my right hand man since this thing started. Without him, this thing would've never left the ground.

I have known Morgan since before the war. His brother and my dad were in the service together. I think he has niece, I hope she's okay.

Huh, I hope we're okay. This mall is way far away from anyone else's living quarters. As far as I know, we are the only ones that know about this place, other than Morgan and a few other highly trusted people.

It's a miracle I even know about this place. One day, while I was hunting, I saw a glint out of the quarter of my eye. I hadn't seen anything yet that day so I decided there was no reason not to check it out. As I got closer to the site of the glint, I saw the building. It looked very alien at first, everything now was very bland, because of its silvery finish.

We have been meeting in the security room since I discovered the mall. We have access to two way radios, security cameras, and a secret meeting place. The mall actually has access to electricity, but I don't turn all the breakers on, because I don't want to risk the chance of us being located.

Seth sure is taking this well. This is so much to take in for him. There is no way I could handle all of this so well, if I was in his shoes. He's 16, and I'm so proud of the man he has become. He is a leader. He is calm when he needs to be, confident, smart, and caring.

I understand why he wanted to go explore the mall. He wanted to clear his mind. I'm actually glad he isn't with me right now; I'm not sure how to explain myself to him.

What was that? My ears picked up footsteps coming from the entrance to the security room. I slowly reached over to grab my rifle.

My rifle is an old standard issue M4-A1. One of the resistance lured a NASR soldier into her living compartment. She was a very attractive woman, and it was easy to see how she tricked him. I'm not sure of all the details, but that NASR soldier had a key on him that accessed a weapons vault. Now all of his weapons are now our weapons.

I stealthily moved to a tactical position overlooking the door. I shut off all the lights and got ready for whatever was about to happen. The footsteps got closer, and finally, the door was kicked open and the silhouette of a pistol with a flashlight was shown into the darkness.

"Drop the weapon and get down on the ground!" I forcefully yelled.

Surprisingly, the intruder did just what I said. I maneuvered over to the gun and kicked it out of reach. With my rifle still shouldered, I reached over to flick on the light.

He dashed at me before my hand could reach the switch. My head slammed on the concrete floor. A sharp pain shot into my head. I blacked out for a moment, and when I came to, I was welcomed with the barrel of a pistol pointed at my face.
