Chapter 16 - Seth
Chapter 16 - Seth
Leaning against the cool concrete wall, It was so near impossible to keep awake. I glanced at my watch. 5:17.
"Is it necessary to be up this early?" Alex whined while rubbing her eyes.
"Yes. We need to get to where ever this tunnel ends as soon as possible." Oliver said as he was hastily gathering everyone's things. Well, considering we didn't have anything, just his things.
"Well wouldn't we be more efficient if we rested for longer? That way we could move faster. Right Seth?" Alex looked at me expectantly.
I looked up at Alex, then at Oliver. They were both expecting me to give them some kind of answer. Alex looked at me more out of spite than anything, but Oliver was giving me a different look. More of a stare honestly. Wait was he staring at me? I shot him a look of judgement and he blushed like a tomato. I rose to my feet and brushed off my dirt from my pants. Oliver's black backpack was lying on the ground adjacent to us. I strolled over to it and slung it over my shoulder.
"Well then," I spun to face them. "We had better get going."
We walked in complete silence, for a little while at least. Every once in a while there would be a whine from Alex complaining about how tired she was or how much her feet hurt. I think she may have started sobbing once, but I didn't take the time to acknowledge her. Didn't want to feed the fire. I had my own problems to think about. For one, how in the world was I going to find my brother. Whenever we get to the end of this tunnel, if we ever do, where will we be? I just know I have to find Ben, no matter what. We're family, and these days that's the only thing that matters. Besides, he would no doubt do the same thing for me.
Speaking of family, I knew nothing about Oliver's, other than the fact that his mom was dead. To be honest I didn't really know anything about Oliver. Other than the fact that his personality, at least so far, was boisterous and arrogant, I was in the dark. There was something that I could tell he was hiding. There was also a shy awkwardness about him that I couldn't quite place. Which bothered me. I like knowing everything.
I slowed my pace so that I could fall back with Oliver. I shot Alex a look so she would move up but she wasn't paying attention. What a surprise. After clearing my throat and still not getting her attention, just a few awkward looks from Oliver, I just told her to get in front of us. I might have said it a bit to forcefully because she just stopped outright.
"Excuse me? You're the one who wanted to take the lead. Don't freak out on me just because you want to walk next to your boyfriend." She said angrily. Then she slumped to the ground and started sobbing.
"Alex get over yourself. I didn't realize you were so attached to him." I jabbed back. She just sobbed louder.
I was about to say something else stupid, but Oliver reached out and touched my shoulder and gave me a look. You know, the "shut up before you dig yourself a deeper hole" kind of look. I sighed and walked a ways down the tunnel and say down.
I could see him trying to comfort her and her throwing her arms around. He had his arm around her. What a womanizer. He's known her for less than a full day and he's already trying to get with her.
Not that I care. Well I do. But just not in that way. I mean I've only known her for a few days. And those days have been filled with crazy situations and stress. Even though we've only known each other for such short a time, we've been through a lot together. Maybe...no, no. That's stupid. Even if I did, it's not the time to think about those things.
That would make me, all of us, weak, and that's not about to happen. It looked like Oli had managed to calm the storm that Alex had created. I walk purposefully over to them.
