"Hey, Maya." Said Lucas, walking up to her in the hallway.
"Hi, Lucas."
"Lucas?"
"Appreciate it when I do call you by your name."
"Did you do your homework?"
"I was a little busy."
"Maya!"
"I'm sorry, I fell asleep right after- right after I got home."
"Mr.Matthews thinks that you need a touter."
"Great." She said, sarcastically.
"He said I should touter you."
"Even better." She said, also sarcastically.
"How's the library at six?"
"I'll try."
"Kay, I'll pick you up."
"No thanks,that's okay." She said, a bit to quickly. Lucas looked at her confused. "I just wanna walk alone."
"Okay then."
That night, Maya was able to make it.
"Start with math?"
"Sure." She said, nearly inaudibly, placing her binder on the table and opening it up to her homework and then her textbook.
"Okay, so how about we go through each part, step by step."
2(1-x)+5 is less than or equal to 3(2x-1)
Maya stared at the problem for a moment.
"Don't worry. I'll explain it. Do you know the first step?"
Maya whispered so quietly to herself that Lucas could not understand any thing she said. He watched her for a moment.
"Maya it's okay if you don't understand it. Don't fry your brain."
"Five fourths is greater than or equal to x." She said as she wrote out all the work to the equation, then turning the page to him.
"That's correct."
"I do math in my head most of the time but we have to show our work."
"You do pay attention. Why are you struggling?"
"I get scared during tests and I just don't have time for homework."
"I see you at Topangas every day, not doing homework. You could do it then."
"When is the last time you saw me there?" Lucas thought for a moment.
"A little over a week."
"Exactly." She turned back and continued her homework. She finished her math and then Lucas made her write her history paragraph twice because he felt it was not to her full potential. Her second was twice as long and detailed as the first.
