Lucas was supposed to touter Maya one night. Maya went home before the meet up. She didn't think that her mothers boyfriend, or future step-dad, would be back yet but when she entered the apartment, she saw broken bottles and her mother on the floor, trying to get away from him. He threw a broken glass at Maya head. She moved to the side but the edge of the glass got her cheek. She let out a cry of pain.
"Shut up and close the door." Maya closed the door as she was told to.
He looked at Katy and pointed to her room as if she were a little girl that had done something wrong or a dog that had gone inside the house.
"The sooner you go, the less I will hurt her. Remember, if you say a word, I will kill you both."
"Stay strong." She said to Maya, scurrying out of the room as he threw a bottle at her and missed.
He ran up to her and slammed her against the wall, punching her in the stomach until she fell. He kicked her in the ribs and then her back. Finally, he kicked her in the head and she fell unconscious. She didn't show up at the library that night.

"Where were you, last night?" Asked Lucas, finding the girl in the hallway, at her locker.
"At home."
"We were supposed to meet at the library."
"Sorry. I forgot."
"How could you forget, I told you like, five times during the day."
"Sorry."
"You wanna meet there tonight?"
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"I just can't, Lucas." She said, turning and than walking into class.
When it was time to pass in homework, Maya didn't have hers.
"Why didn't you do it?"
"I'm sorry."
"You were getting better."
"I was. Now I'm not."
"What? You're just giving up because you missed one homework assignment?"
"I can't."
"You can't give up. I will expect it tomorrow."
He walked back to the front of his class and began to teach. Riley looked over to Maya every once in a while but Maya never looked up from her notebook.
