Part 2
When Alex was a kid, he spent hours daydreaming about his soulmate.
He would come up with so many different scenarios of how they'd meet but his favourite was always the one where they found each other as children and grew old together. It was inspired by his maternal grandparents, who were always kind to him and kinder still to one another, even after all those years. He knew that was something he wanted.
But growing up meant facing the fact that that wasn't what life had in store for him.
Alex would be lying if he said he didn't want that happy ending. He did, and badly, but he was also eighteen and living in one of the most sexually expressive eras and he wanted to enjoy his university experience. Between lacrosse, work and society events, he hadn't been thinking of his soulmate much, or even at all.
So maybe Alex freaked out.
He didn't remember if he'd spoke, not that he needed to since Freddie had seen his wrist already, but he did remember the sudden overwhelming urge to run. He just needed to get away and he shoved past Freddie roughly, losing himself in the throng of people outside.
"Hey, are you ordering?"
Alex looked up in surprise, not realising he'd walked up to the bar, "Uh, yeah, can you get me something strong? Like a Russian cider."
"Sure," she smiled at him, "coming right up."
"Actually," he said, catching her attention, "can I get two?"
"Of course."
He knew from experience his friends would be outside in the garden area, drinking to make up for sobering in the queue. They weren't hard to find, sitting at one of the benches, and he sat down next to them, placed his glasses on the table.
"Are you feeling better?" Megan asked, looking up at him.
"Yeah, lots." He smiled and, though it was a little terse, she was too tipsy to notice.
"What are you drinking?" Jessica asked, reaching over to pull one of the drinks closer and taking a sip, "Oh, I think I taste vodka."
Alex grinned at her, familiar at least with this, "You're right, but what is it mixed with?"
"Can I take another sip?"
"Go ahead," he said, reaching for the other one.
She hummed, letting the taste settle on her tongue before saying slowly. "It's cider. Vodka and cider, right?"
"Holy shit, she does it again!"
Megan frowned at them, "I don't know whether to be impressed or worried for you."
"Impressed," Jessica said, before grinning, "but I actually recognised the colour of the drink."
"That's cheating!" Alex exclaimed.
"Why are you drinking anything so strong anyway?" Megan asked. "I thought you just threw up because you drank too much."
He nodded, "Yeah, but it was tactical. That means I can drink again now, and strong drinks, without the fear of throwing up."
"I don't think it works like that. Sean, back me up here."
"Sorry." Sean looked up from his phone, "I was distracted, can you repeat that?"
"What are you looking at?" Alex asked, craning his neck.
He flashed him his phone, "Freddie said he'd come out to the garden area to meet us but he's not here yet. I'm just waiting for him to text."
