Part 15

Sean proposed in the middle of sex.

It was a piece of information Alex really, really didn't need to know but Jessica had been bugging Sean for details. The two of them had informally but quite seriously planned a lavish affair for the proposal so she'd wanted to know what'd beaten out their idea. Freddie, smiling, had told her and Jessica had looked torn between asking for a do over and more explicit details.

"I proposed, he said yes." Sean cut in, red faced but grinning like a loon. "That's all you get to know."

"Fine," she acquiesced, "but I'll only give up if I'm a bridesmaid."

"A bridesmaid?" Freddie laughed. "We haven't planned anything yet. I don't even know if I want bridesmaids."

"Well, Sean does."

Sean shrugged, when Freddie looked at him. "I want a perfect wedding. I want to give you everything in the world, considering what you've already given me."

It was a line from a romantic movie, so cheesy and ridiculous Alex would've laughed, but there was something genuine on Sean's face. Something so serious Alex couldn't break the sanctity of the moment if he wanted to.

"They're gross." Jessica said, but she was smiling.

And Freddie was smiling, too, when he flipped her off and kissed his fiancé.

It should've been a big change, going from boyfriends to fiancés, but the two of them had been so close already it didn't make a difference. The only time it was made into an issue was when they announced the engagement on Sean's blog. There'd been a public furore about it, some people excited and others furious, and there were still a few people Freddie no longer spoke to.

"Bigots, all of them," Freddie scowled, and Alex had forgotten how hot he looked when angry, "I don't need those assholes in my life."

It was a while later before he learnt the real reason behind Freddie's anger. It hadn't been because he'd lost friends but because the incident had left Sean full of doubts. Sean was the budding politician, and he was used to the abuse, but Freddie had never signed up for it. If Megan was telling the truth, Sean had been one step away from calling off the engagement.

Alex hadn't known. "Freddie didn't tell me."

"You and Freddie don't talk." Megan said, not meaning to be cruel. "And it was a personal thing."

"Yeah, of course."

Alex knew he wasn't as close to Freddie as he had been but he'd slip up sometimes and forget. He'd have something good happen to him and he'd immediately grab his phone to tell Freddie and then his fingers would stop and he'd remember they weren't like that anymore. He settled for calling Robert instead and listening to the deep rumble of his voice which was worlds away from that of his son's.

They'd talked a lot since the accident, more than Freddie and he ever had.

"Have you got the save the date?"

"It came through the letterbox this morning. A July wedding, it doesn't give them much time to plan." He said, a frown in his voice. "I thought they'd spend a year or two engaged before they married."

"It's an image thing." Alex said, because he'd asked about it, too. "Sean needs to look good when he's running for a seat and being married is something they can spin a lot better than being some crazy, home-wrecking activist. He told me he's campaigning this summer and Freddie's got placement so the dates make sense."

"You sound a lot better about it than I thought you would."

He'd surprised himself with that, too, "Yeah, it looks like, a year and seven months after the accident, I'm finally moving on."
