Shelby

"Mum did you hear about robots taking over?" Shelby was always intrigued by science, especially AI. "Apparently there won't be any point in humans going to work in the next few years, does that mean I don't have to go to school anymore?"

"Shelby what's wrong with you, robots won't take over that's impossible. You need to stop watching so many Sci-Fi films." Shelby's mother, Lori, grew tired of hearing her daughters crazy theories.

"No seriously its all over the news, scientists are making AI so humans aren't needed anymore. There will be AI doing everything in the next decade or something."

"Your old enough to know that the media lies, Shelby, not everything you see on the Internet is true."

"But think about it, science is getting more and more... Sciency... You know what I mean."

"I thought you were smarter than this Shelby, seriously you really should stop with all these Sci-Fi films, your imagination is too much for me to handle."

"Whatever, I still think there's no need for me to go to school. An AI will take my job anyway."

As Shelby walked away to do some more research on AI's on the computer when Lori's phone rang. It was her ex husband aka Shelby's father. Lori let the phone ring until it stopped. She didn't want her daughter to have any contact with him as he walked out when she was 2 and has only just started calling to make amends. After 15 long years. Lori reckoned she knew what was best for Shelby and never told her about the recent phone calls. Lori does answer his calls, but only when Shelby is out of the house. Lori even has her ex husband name saved as 'Rita' on her phone when that obviously isn't his name.

"Mum why don't you answer your damn phone!" Shouted Shelby from the other room.

"Oh it's just some cold caller, god knows where they got my number from." Lori lied

"Mum guess what!"

"What now?"

"Most cold callers are robots."

"That's nice sweetie" Lori was bored of her daughter talking about how science was taking over the world and wished her daughter could be a bit more normal.

Shelby continued with her research, Typing out pros and cons of AI's taking over humans. She had found so many different websites and printed pages and pages of research. Shelby dreams to make her own AI one day.

"Paper doesn't grow on trees Shelby!" Lori cried after hearing the printer go off constantly for the past five minutes.

"Uh, yeah it does mum." Shelby said while rolling her eyes.

"Well yeah but you know what I meant to say, you need to save paper, because if you keep printing all that crap then there will be no trees." Lori's phone rang again so she just let it ring. When it stopped Lori put it on silent and quickly texted 'Rita' to tell him to stop.

-Ricky stop phoning me, my daughter is home right now and I have told her about you contacting me yet

-Why not Lori, are you afraid? Afraid that she might get mad at you for hiding the fact her father is trying to get in touch with her? And she's my daughter too...

-If you never walked out in the first place, maybe you wouldn't need to be trying to contact her, you would be with her, but it's too late what's done is done, you made your dumb mistake and quit being a father now you're paying for your actions.

-How many times do I have to say I'm sorry, I've cleaned up my act, let me meet my little girl, I promise I'll be a better father now.

-Now? After 15 years? Now that Shelby is old enough to take care of her self? Now that you don't need to be responsible for her as much as you did when she was two? Now that she's nearly an adult? Ricky, you can't not nurture a child and expect them to see you as their parental figure when they are a fully grown adult.
