I passed. What just happened?

"I'm sure you are very confused, but that was actually the first test. We want our Queen to be compassionate and you did just that by saving the demons. You are now ready for your next test. " Elder Michel said.

He reached over and pulled a lever. Suddenly, the floor dropped out. I snapped out my wings immediately and hovered there above the bottomless pit that had opened up.

"What was that for? I could've died!"  I yelled.

"Congratulations. You have passed the second test. Your ability to think on your feet, or in this case, wings." He explained.

These tests were insane.

"Now for you final test. You will be administered a drug that will test your ability to face your fears. We want our royals to be fearless. Are you ready, Mia?"

"Yes."

A woman came out onto the circle. She smiled at me and took my arm. She slid a needle into my veins. I felt a burn spread through my body. It became so hot that I dropped to my knees unable to take the pain. The world faded to black.

I woke up in a soft bed. Sunlight shined through the curtains. I got up and instantly recognized where I was. This was my old dorm room at the Academy. Walking around, I noticed that one of the windows had been cracked open, like someone had gone through but had forgotten to close it.

I climbed out and looked around. There was a woman with her back to me. She was standing near the fountain in the courtyard. She had long blonde hair. Her wings were pure white and shimmered where the sun touched them.

"Hello? Can you hear me?" I called out.

She turned around and I gasped.

"Mom?"

"Hello sweetheart." She answered.

I started to run towards her. But something started to happen. She gasped and looked down at her stomach. A bright red blossom was spreading through her blouse. She doubled over and started to sink to her knees. I could hear her breathing hard.

"Mom!" I sprinted the rest of the way and caught her before she fell. I put her head in my lap.

"Mom! Please don't leave me!" I screamed.

"Mia, always remember that I love you." She whispered and went still. I started to sob. The world faded again into darkness.

"Mia, Mia can you hear me?"

I recognized that voice but who was it?

I slowly opened my eyes to find piercing blue eyes staring at me with concern.

"Onyx? What are you doing in here? I thought you weren't allowed."

"I heard you scream and I ran inside. I found you lying on the ground crying."

"I'm sorry. The drug made me see my mom's death." I shuddered.

"Oh, Mia. I'm so sorry you had to see that. What can I do to help?" Onyx whispered.

"Where is everyone?" I looked around and saw that all of the chairs were empty.

"They decided to reconvene later to give you time to rest and relax. They didn't want you to be stressed out when they made your decision. We'll come back in a few weeks. " He explained.

"Hey Onyx, can we go home?"

Home. I never thought that Hell would be a home for me. But I guess it's funny how things turn out. I tried to stand up but failed because of how shaky my legs were. Onyx caught me before I fell and cradled me in his arms.

"Sure we can princess." He said.

The gentle swaying of his arms made my eyes droop.

"Go ahead and sleep. We'll be home in a few hours anyways." He told me.

That was all it took to make me fall asleep to the rhythm of Onyx's heartbeat.
