"What? We get only three portions" Suzy says.
"Immortality? Do you guys even know what you're saying? Are you all crazy?" I ask.
"No. It's true. We'll tell you everything later" Mathew says reassuringly.
"You need the lasers and I want to be immortal. Simple as that" Hickey says plainly.
"It's a tough call. What do you think Mathew?" Suzy asks.
"I don't... Do we have a choice?" Mathew asks.
"No other alternative" Suzy mumbles.
"Okay. You get one portion" Suzy says.
"Isn't that illegal?" a voice says from behind.
We all turn back. A tall, muscular and attractive male is stood behind us.
"Hal? What are you doing here?" Suzy asks.
"I heard you guys talking about sharing the serum in return for lasers. Do you know what Bill will do if he finds out?" Hal says raising an eyebrow.
"Okay Suzy. I'll catch up later" Hickey says and walks off.
"You're not gonna tell him. I know you won't" Suzy says.
"What makes you so sure?" He asks.
"I just know. You'd never get me in trouble" she says confidently.
It's funny how Suzy seems like a normal human being now. I thought she can't talk nice.
"Things have changed Suzy. To each is own. Now that it comes to winning the race, don't expect anything from me. We're just competitors now. We don't have to kill each other though. You'll just have to let me win if you want to live" he says.
"So much for being buddies once upon a time" Mathew says with a smirk.
"You have no business here" Hal says.
He then looks at me.
"Is she your one? She's puny! Hah! You're definitely not going to win" he says laughing.
I give him a dirty stare.
"Jerk" I say.
"Don't you dare stare at me like that. Do you even know who I am? I'm the guy that gets whatever he wants. I rule here" he says with pride.
"Oh I seem to care so much. Please, Suzy will kick your ass so hard that-"
"Whoa. Whoa. Stop right there. You know nothing. Suzy Is the last person to-"
"Things have changed Hal. It's all about winning now" Suzy says with a serious face.
"Fine Suzy. You're gonna regret talking to me like that kid" he says looking at me.
Mathew glares at him. It looks like he might just hit him.
"What do you want Hal?" Mathew asks.
"I want you to postpone the race. I'll keep quiet about this then. Suzy is the only one that Bill trusts. You can make him change his mind. He will postpone the race but you know he won't let you have the lasers. He'll just tell you to manage with the knifes. He won't take any explanation even if you tell him it's not your fault that you didn't receive the briefcase" Hal says.
"Bill the boss will listen to you? Then you can certainly get me out of this race" I say with expectation.
Just then Mathew looks at me with an unreadable expression.
"It's not that easy. Shea, I can't get you out. Once you've been chosen, there's no going back" Suzy says.
For once she talks to me like I'm not dirt to her.
"You can postpone it. C'mon. You need time to train this imbecile of yours" he says looking at me.
"Just stop it Hal. You really think you're the best huh? Just because you're bigger, doesn't mean you have an upper edge. We have in fact. Puny Shea here can climb trees better than any of us" Mathew comes to my defense.
"Oh! We'll see about that. So...You have a soft corner for the little brat eh?" Hal asks coming closer to Mathew.
"Listen Hal, I'll try my best. But in return, you will not say anything to anyone about this" Suzy says.
"Your secret's safe with me" Hal says still looking eye to eye at Mathew.
"But why do you want to postpone it?" Suzy asks.
"The teen that I was assigned to came in just now. She's trained but hurt. Last night, some of the men in the agency attacked her. I didn't know the entire story but we have them now" he says.
"Who are they? You got the names?" Suzy asks.
"The leader's name is Ned. They wouldn't say a word to us about who they work for" Hal says.
Ned. The name rings a bell.
"Ned? But.... He works for us!" Mathew says.
"What? You sent him to get my girl?" Hal asks angrily.
"Why would we do that? I'm not that vindictive Hal" Suzy says.
"That's not possible! Two people from the same city? That hardly ever happens" Suzy says.
"It happens" Mathew says.
"So where is she?" Suzy asks.
"Taking rest. She can't run tomorrow. Her legs are bruised"
"Wait... What's her name?" I ask.
"Her name is Emily" Hal says.
