The rest of the day was a blur of flashing lights and yelling parents. I was in so much shock that I don't even I don't even remember going to bed that night. All I could remember from that day was the nightmare.
It was the bomb going off in the warehouse repeating over and over again, but in other people's perspective. Some of them were not as tragic, in others I could feel their pain. The only one I couldn't see was the mysterious boy that I saw before it went off.
I awoke the next morning in cold sweat. I looked around and noticed that some things were knocked of my shelves. I might have another fight last night with my parents. I put it all back and went to my bathroom. I looked into the mirror and noticed my hair looked healthier and my skin was clear of of any scars and acne. Even some of my childhood scars were gone, like the one I got from falling down a rocky hill on my bike that was under my chin.
I got got ready and admired my newer look. Being that it was the middle of the summer and had nothing to do but think, I immediately made up my mind to go to the library for research on my current condition.
I packed my backpack with some bus and food money, my phone that surprisingly survived the bomb, and stuff to cover up me being an evo.
I walked out my front door and saw that it was completely dead. I walk to the bus stop and waited. The bus showed up a few minutes later. I could already see the damage of the bomb on the bus. There was graffiti on the bus with the nastiest anti-evo things I'd ever seen that couldn't even look at it. It was just so personal now, it made it worse.
I climbed on and put the money in the collector. I sat down by no one and if I was to sit by someone I couldn't because the bus to was empty like the town.
The driver didn't speak to me and started driving.
As the bus moved along you could see people starting to accumulate until they were all gathered into the street between the only church in New Odessa and the library. They were holding up signs proclaiming the library shouldn't allow evo to go there, that the evo should be undereducated so they don't retaliate again.
The bus driver tried driving through the people, but the people started to bang on the bus and made move side to side.
"Why are they doing this? I asked, grabbing onto the seat.
"They know that I'm a registered evo," he said trying to regain control. "You'll have to get off right here, I can't get through this crowd." He looked over at me with an apologetic look, then out out of his seat and went to the door. He pried it open with his two hands with ease. Now, he was a scrawny guy, which meant he had super strength. This could be useful one day, so on my way out I touched him with my elbow casually.
I felt the small electric pulse go through me. I felt another thing go through me. The hunger for more powers.
I stepped out of the bus and people went into a silent whisper around me. There was one distinct sentence I could make out from the crowd, "How is she alive?" It was true that had told everyone that I was definitely going to the warehouse, it would be weird for me to be alive or walking without injury.
I ignored their whispers and their attempts to get a closer look at me and made my way to the library without getting harassed.
Once I made it inside of the building I made a beeline to the nonfiction section to find the most famous book on evos. "Evolution" by Dr. Suresh.
I grabbed the book, turned around fast and jumped back because there was someone that was standing there. The person was much taller than me and I couldn't their face. I looked up slowly and was taken aback. It was the guy that winked at me before the explosion.
"You," I whispered with utter hate.
"I take it that you remember me from the warehouse," he said jokingly. He tried to touch my arm, but I moves to the side quickly in fear he might also be and evo.
"Did you set off the bomb? I asked, looking straight into his chocolate brown eyes.
"Of course not, I support the evos," he said proundly. "I know who might have set it off though."
"Who?" I asked eagerly.
"I'm not going to tell you, It would ruin the surprise," he said smiling. I wanted to shove him into the bookshelf behind him.
"Are you always this irritating?" He only smiled in response as if he were remembering a past memory. I walked away from him and went to the front desk to check out the book. I could hear his footsteps behind me. "I know you're right behind me," I say as the librarian is checking the book out.
"Excuse me miss, I'm going to have ask you to scan your right arm to check if your an evo," the old lady said.
"I thought that this place was open to evos," I said angered. I turned my head and saw that the guy wasn't there. So much for backup. I put my wrist under the scanner with no choice and for a response. It glowed green, I was safe.
The lady hands me the book and says, "It's a government order to have these in every library just in case the evos want to get deadly information." I walked away before I could answer and went the the corner of the library that had couches. I sat down and opened the book and started reading.
Halfway through the fifth page I feel someone sit down next to me. I scooted away because it was him and didn't want whatever power he has. I look over and he's reading a newspaper.
"'The deadly terrorist attack on the Primatech Warehouse has been declared as the worst in American history. Reports from the ceo of Renatus says that the leader of the terrorists is Mohinder Suresh, a geneticist working for Renatus and the son of the author the best selling book "Evolution", who is an evo himself'," the guy reads from the newspaper.
"Why are you following me?" I whisper loudly. He smiles, I want to smack that look off of his face. "And what's your name?"
"I'm Kane and I'm following you so you don't get any dumb ideas." He folds the newspaper and sets it next to him.
"Why would I get any dumb ideas?"
"You know how you have the ability to absorb other evos powers?" He asked, I nod in response. "Well, you have the strain of the power that leads to addiction of more powers."
"How do you know this?"
"I used to worked for Pri- I mean a company that specializes in protecting evos and after the company burned to the ground I went to find you."
"Whatever, can you just not be so creepy."
"Let's start over. Hi, my name's Kane and it's nice to meet you." He doesn't hold his hand out for a shake. He doesn't want me to have his power.
"I'm Emma," I smile a little now that I know it should be a little easier. "So could please either leave me alone to read this book or help my understands what all of this means," I say, he smiles.
"I'll help," he said and then proceeded to look at the page I was on.
