Your wedding day was suppose to be the best day of your life, one that would be engraved in your mind for all eternity. And it would be, but not a happy one as you'd originally hoped. Your wedding day would forever be remembered as the day that landed your husband in intensive care. You kept asking yourself why couldn't it have been you who'd been on the receiving end of the knife storm. You couldn't die. You would have healed and been walking around like nothing happened in a few days tops if it were you in the Candy Kingdom hospital bed. But no, Finn was the one connected to a respirator. He was the one lying unconscious in the hospital bed. He was a normal human, not "improved" like you were.
"(Name)"
It should've been you. Why didn't you protect him?
"(Name)"
Why'd he have to play the hero?!
"(Name)!"
"What?" You said in voice barely above a whisper. When you turned your eyes towards PB she gasped and took a step back, undoubtably a bit frightened (or surprised) by their appearance. They didn't look human when you were stressed or scared. With a light sigh you turned your attention back to Finn who was lying in the hospital bed.
"What do you want?!" You said, unable to keep the frigidness from your tone.
"Finns condition hasn't improved-"
"Oh really?!" You said with widened eyes and a sarcastic surprised expression, "I never would have guessed by how he's laying there covered in cuts with an iv hanging out of his arm!"
"Now calm down (Name),"
"No I will not CALM DOWN!" You boomed at the princess and stood from your chair, "My husband has been here for months! MONTHS! With still no change in his 'condition'. Your science hasn't done a damn thing to help him!"
A cold hand came to rest on your shoulder, applying a bit of pressure, trying to make you sit down again. You threw a glare back at Marshall Lee before turning to Bubblegum.
"What do you have to say Bonnie?" Marshall Lee asked.
"I was going to say," she said, glancing at you then her clip board, "I have a suggestion. It's a bit risky, but it could save Finns life."
"What is it?" You said with fierce eyes.
After a long scientific explanation (that left Marshall incredibly confused) you shook your head. What she wanted to do was much too risky.
"No," you said firmly.
"It could save his li-"
"It could also kill him!!" You fumed, "They went through hundreds of humans before they found a host that was compatable with the serum. And it was by accident!"
"Your father took the same risk that I'm asking you to take (Name), the serum in your blood saved your life, there's a possibility that it could save his life to."
Its too risky. There's a fifty fifty chance that it could save him or kill him. You don't want to do it, because there's no way to know how this will effect Finn, but regardless of your personal feelings about the matter you know that something has to be done. The longer he just lays there the worse he seems to get. Either way he could die, but if you take the chance that Bubblegum is asking you to he could live. Not only that, he could be like you, almost immortal. After what seemed like forever you gave your very uncertain answer with a shaky voice.
"O-okay."
Bubblegum must have anticipated your answer, because it seemed like she had everything prepared. She drew two bags worth of your blood, only glob knows why she needed that much, but it left you feeling a bit dizzy. After taking your blood it took her nearly three days to run her tests and derive a strong enough strain of the serum from it. When the time finally came for her to inject him with it your heart felt like it was going to burst out of your chest. If he dies from this it really will be your fault. You already put him in the hospital, now you're taking a risk that might put him in the grave on top of it. Just as she was about to inject the serum into Finns IV you gripped her wrist.
"(Name)," She said and gave you an almost understanding look, "I know that you're scared, but my calculations say that he has a sixty-seven percent higher chance of survival if we do this."
Her words, although curt and emotionless, were some how comforting. Taking in a deep breath you made yourself let go of her. With a soft nod you closed your eyes. You couldn't watch, but you could hear the sound of the syringe puncturing into the IV.
"It's done (name)," Bubblegum said and rested her hand on your shoulder, "it could be a little while before we get any results but until then-"
"(Name)?"
His voice was so sudden. Cutting through the heavy atmosphere of the room like a blade. You were so stunned that you could barely bring yourself to look down at the bed, afraid that it might just be your mind playing tricks on you. But the surprised expression on Bubblegums face made you think otherwise. Biting your lip slightly you willed yourself to look at Finn. Sure enough there he was, using his elbows to partially sit up on the hospital bed and taking the oxygen mask away from his face, his big blue eyes baring into yours. You could hardly breathe.
"Finn," Your voice came out barely above a whisper.
The cuts and scabs were already mending themselves closed and his skin was regaining it's healthy glow. Fully sitting up, the corners of his lips tugged into a smile. The one you'd come to miss immensely over the last three months.
"Why are you crying (Name)?" He asked and reached out a hand to wrap it gently around yours.
"Oh, uh," you stammered, and used the heel of your hand to wipe away your tears. You didn't even realize that you were crying until Finn said something, "Sorry."
With little to no hesitance you practically launched yourself at Finn, wrapping your arms around him and burying your face against his neck. With his chest pressed against yours the way it was you could feel his heartbeat.
"Oh god, I almost thought I lost you," you said as tears rolled down your face. Finns arms encircled your torso and held you close, giving you a sense of comfort that you haven't had for months.
"C'mon (Name)," Your husband said in a soothing tone, "let's go home."
Of course Bubblegum wouldn't let Finn just leave. She wanted to take a few viles of his blood for testing, took his vitals, and had various tests ran on him. But when all that was through she said it was okay for the two of you to leave.
"Now I know how you felt that first day I brought you to see PB," Finn said with a slight laugh as he lightly rubbed the bandaged curve of his arm.
You leaned into each other as you headed home towards the tree house, your fingers entwined with one anothers. The sun was high in the sky at this point, its warm rays beating down on you and Finn. You were trying very hard to ignore the nagging feeling of worry in the back of your mind. You were happy that Finn was no longer in the hospital. He looks fine, he's acting normal, but something keeps telling you that some things wrong, that its too good to be true.
"Jake!" Finn yelled happily as he ran to hug his canine brother.
You couldn't help but notice the hesitance Jake had when Finn hugged him. It was like he had to think for a moment before reluctantly returning the embrace. Jake looked towards you during Finns hug, giving you a look that only increased your feeling of worry.
"Why don't you go take a nice long hot shower," you suggested to Finn and rested your hand on his shoulder, "Im sure it'll feel great. And while you're doing that Jake and I will get a good lunch together to welcome you home."
"That sounds great!" Finn smiled enthusiastically and kissed your cheek before heading to the bathroom.
You smiled as he left the room, but once you were sure he was out of hearing range your smile fell into a concerned frown. You and Jake met eyes, his expression mirroring yours.
"Is Finn okay?" He asked you in a hushed tone, his eyes glancing towards the door Finn left through.
"I really hope so," you answered and stepped towards the fridge, "Now, how about we get to making the returning hero a bombastic lunch?"
For lunch you and Jake made meatloaf, Finns favorite. But when Finn came down from his shower he wrinkled his nose at the plate you had set down for him. The way he pushed the plate away, and scrunched up his face made you and his canine brother glance at each other.
"What's wrong Finn, aren't you gonna eat your meatloaf?" Jake asked.
"It smells funny," Finn said pinching his nose and stepping away from the table, "Did you change the recipe or something?"
"No, its the same as always." Jake said and scowled a bit.
"I'm not gonna eat it," Finn said bluntly and stepped towards the fridge. After a bit of digging he pulled out a few items, none of which went together, just the idea of mixing them all made your stomach turn.
"Finn?" You said with a questioning tone and stepped forward.
"What?" He snapped and looked at you with a scowl as he practically inhaled his food. You held back a gasp when your eyes met his. Those eyes... consumed in black, and terrifyingly sharp. They were like yours the day ice king had tried to attack Finn. They only stayed that way for a moment before returning to Finns natural blue, his expression softening, "what?"
"N-Nothing," You said, taking another step forward to kiss Finns temple softly and run your hands over his shoulders and down his arms, "Nothing."
Jake could tell that something was up with his brother. You'd already told him how PB was going to inject Finn with the serum that made you the way you are when she brought the suggestion to you. So the only logical reason for his behavior is the serum. The amount of worry you felt was almost overwhelming, like a tsunami crashing over you. You'd seen so many others eaten alive, devoured body and soul by the serum that runs through your veins. Watching your husband consume the pile of food that would revolt him under normal conditions made you feel that he was going to turn into one of the nightmares you'd faced back in that horrid lab. A twisted creature without an ounce of humanity left in him.
Later that night Jake left to be with Lady, leaving you and Finn alone in the treehouse. He'd fallen asleep in your arms, his face resting on your shoulder and his arms wrapped around your waist. Although it was late and you were tired, you couldn't bring yourself to relax enough to sleep. Or at least that's what you thought. It seemed like you layed there stroking Finns hair for hours, but at some point you dosed off.
"(Name)," You heard a rough voice croak.
Your eyes jolted open and just as a large fist was being brought down towards your chest you managed to jump away. Your breath caught in your throat at the sight of what crouched over your bed. It was roughly human in physique, but large spikes protruded along its spine and its hind legs looked stretched out and thin.
"(Name)" the creature croaked again. Its voice was rough and deep, vaguely human, but more like a dog trying to speak. The creature lifted its fist from the hole it'd made through the bed, nothing but the sound of its heavy congested breathing filled the room. For the longest time it stayed where it was, looking at you. When it set its fist on the wood floor you heard a light "clink". You glanced downwards and were met with the soft shine of a silver wedding band. Your eyes began to fill with tears and a deep pain impaled itself into your heart.
"Finn,"
The creature lowered its head, like a predator preparing to pounce. Even in such a twisted state you could see that it was your husband whose now sharp blue eyes bore into you. His hair was no longer the beautiful blonde that you'd known, but was instead a dark mossy green. The sight of him made you want to vomit, not because he was a monster but because you knew it was the serum in your blood that had done this to him.
"(Name)" He croaked as he pounced towards you, one of his arms swinging.
Forcing yourself to move, you just barely managed to dodge his blow. Without so much as a pause he crouched again and came at you. Each time he'd swing you'd dodge, and each time he leapt at you and missed he'd collide with the wall. He had the strength you did but none of the agility. At a young age you'd done this many times, fought the monsters made by the serum, killed them. But you couldn't bring yourself to even swing at Finn. Tears streaked your face because you knew that there were only two options... kill or be killed. Unless...
(*Some weeks later~~)
"I'm sorry for your loss (Name)," Bubblegum said, resting her hand on your shoulder. The two of you stood there in silence, until she spoke again, "I have a confession to make."
"I'm listening."
"I didn't lie when I said that Finns chance of survival was sixty seven percent higher if we injected him with the serum," she started, "that part was completely true. But I neglected to inform you that there was a ninety two percent chance that Finn wasn't going to be normal once it was done."
All you could do was nod as you looked down at your husbands headstone.
"Finn the human, died a hero." You read outloud.
"Its not a lie," Bubblegum said under her breath.
"I agree."
After exiting the graveyard and following PB down into the candy kingdom dungeon you arrived at a pair of large double doors.
"Can I have a moment?" You asked.
"Of course."
With that you entered the large dark room, greeted by silence. Flipping the light switch beside you the clashing of chains and a goosebump causing growl shook the room. Mere inches from your face were gnashing teeth dripping drool onto the floor. You were tempted to touch his face, but you knew that you may just pull back a bloody stump if you did.
"I promise Finn," you said as tears began to roll down your cheeks, wrapping your arms around yourself to help quiet the trembling of your body, "I'll find a way to change you back, even if it takes forever."
