"Join what?"
The three of us immediately sobered up from our laughter at Ronnie's question. I looked at Jay, then Marv, and they looked at me. I cleared my throat and motioned toward us. "Well...our team." She just raised an eyebrow at me and I sighed. "Jay is better at explaining than Marv and I." Marv nodded in agreement and we looked at Jay. He just blinked a couple times and looked back at us. "Where do I start?" I hit my hand to my face and heard Marv snort. "Just...everything Jay" I said.
Jay thought a moment before beginning. "Hmm...well first off, we don't exist. If you went to search for records on our births, you wouldn't find any. Because if we were found we would be hunted by people who act completely against what we do." Ronnie asked a quick question; "What do you do?" Jay smiled at her, then Marv. "I think you'd explain that part best." Marvy looked at Jay and shrugged. "Okay. What we do is help people we know for a fact deserve it. We give them a chance to live a good life." Ronnie's eyes widened then looked at the floor. She shifted a bit in the small silence then said, "How do you know they deserve it?"
"We keep an eye on them for at least three years" I answered. "Not continually. Other teams watch and we all agree. One team per year. The third team is responsible for getting the victim out and into a better situation." We were all silent a moment as Ronnie took in what we said. She sat down on the arm of the couch and looked at me. "And you want me to become one of you?" I nodded and glanced at Marv. His eyes were in a faraway place, one the rest of use couldn't see. I nudged him and he shook his head slightly, blinking. "Sorry" he mumbled.
Jay answered Ronnie with a nod. "I'll do it then. I like it here anyways. Hell of a lot better than...my house." Marv smiled grimly. "He knows" I said. She looked puzzled and Marv answered before she could ask. "We all have different jobs. Mine is out there, watching. Jay here is medical, in case of emergencies. And Jin deals with the paperwork and other teams. He's also the person Boss gives assignments to." Ronnie nodded. "What would I do?"
"You'd help Marv. Depending on who we need to come in, a girl's sensitivity is needed to soothe the victim," Jay responded. Ronnie snorted and I smiled. I had a feeling she would be it. But then there's the test...
