Mackenzie's alarm clock went off. Driiiing. Driiiing. Mackenzie sighed as she got out of bed. She went to the bathroom and put on her dance wear and makeup. Today was going to be a good day. Well, she hoped. She was going to have a solo this week, and she wanted to prove to Miss Abby that she could be as good, maybe better, than her "perfect" sister Maddie.
Mackenzie made her way confidently downstairs and poured herself some cereal. Her sister Maddie took a seat next to her. "Hey, Kenz, you look happy today," she observed. Mackenzie only smiled back. This solo was the perfect way to prove she had everything Maddie did. It was a beautiful lyrical piece, entitled, Rivers. Mackenzie had been practicing her solo until 12:00 last night. She was so excited to show Miss Abby. Her facial expressions were perfect for this.
"You girls ready to leave?" asked their mother, Melissa. "Coming, Mom!" the girls shouted as they made their way out the door and into the car. Mackenzie held her head high and sang along to the radio as she stared at the beautiful palm trees around her.
When they got to the ALDC, Mackenzie ran in and met up with her best friend Brynn. "Hey, Kenzie!" said Brynn as Mackenzie hugged her. "Why are you so happy?" Mackenzie smiled. "Brynn, I've been practicing this solo all night. I think I finally have a chance of being as good as Maddie!" Brynn squealed. "I'm so excited for you, Kenz! I know you can do it!" The two girls hugged again. "Kenz, Brynn, why aren't you stretching?" asked Maddie from across the room. "Sorry, Mads," said Brynn as she and Kenzie got to work.
"GIRLS!" shouted Abby Lee Miller. The seven girls made their way into the room. "Mackenzie," said Abby calmly. "Please show me your solo..."
Mackenzie had been waiting for this moment. The music began to play, and she did the steps gracefully. She looked in the mirror at herself, but then got distracted by Maddie in the background. Abby whispered something to Maddie, and Maddie nodded and rolled her eyes. Abby was pointing at her. Mackenzie. Mackenzie felt tears form in her eyes. I bet they're talking about me. I'm not good enough. Mackenzie suddenly fell out of her side aerial and landed on her back. Tears were streaming down her face. "MACKENZIE! WHAT WAS THAT?!" exclaimed Abby. "THAT WAS TERRIBLE! AND YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS - YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO THE MADDIE FACE! Maybe I'll just have your sister do this so we can have a winning number!"
"I'm NOT - Maddie!" Mackenzie gasped before she ran out of the room.
