"Wow, two invites to your house, one day after the other. I feel so special." James chuckled the next day, putting his hand on his girlfriend's knee. "Your dad must be warming up to me, huh?"

Riley stared straight ahead. She couldn't make eye contact with her boyfriend. It hurt her.

It hurt her to see how happy he was, it hurt her to see how utterly oblivious he was to what was going to happen, and it hurt her knowing that she was going to break his heart. And her own. They were both going to be utterly heartbroken.

"I love you." She said suddenly out of the blue. James smiled to himself, eyes on the road for a moment longer before tearing away to focus on his girlfriend.

"I love you too, baby girl." He replied, happy as can be.

She slumped down more into the passenger seat, her stomach churning more. Seeing her house becoming clearer through the windshield within every drawing second sent it into a whole new range of pain.

Riley sat absolutely still as James got out of the car and came around to her side to open her door for her. She flinched slightly when his hand lightly brushed up against her arm to coax her out of the car, sending goosebumps crawling down her skin in the process.

They stayed absolutely quiet as she and James walked through the front door of her house as a couple for the last time.

"Don't bother taking your coat off." She spoke firmly to him.

  "Why?"

  "You'll want it again soon."

She linked hands with her beloved boyfriend, guiding him through the ever familiar path to her bedroom.

They stopped at the last step up the stairs upon running into Riley's father.

"James." Was all he said, eyeing the boy up.

"Hello sir." James responded charmingly. Riley wondered why her father didn't like James and his charming self. Yeah, he could act out as being a total idiot sometimes, but his charm could win anyone over. It did for her.

"We're going to my room." Riley told her father, keeping her eyes from his. If they met, she was sure that she would totally snap.

"I'll be standing just outside the door, so don't think you can pull anything." He warned. Although he always said that, normally directed at James, she was sure it was meant for her this time.

"I won't try anything sir, I promise." James chuckled lightheartedly, setting a protective hand on Riley's shoulder.

Riley's father grimaced, but stepped out of the way for them to enter Riley's room.

"Keep the door open." They were instructed sternly. Riley obeyed, although only keeping it open a crack.

James sat on the edge of Riley's bed, waiting for her to join him. But instead she leaned against her dresser on the other side of the room, her eyes on anything but James.

"Okay Riley, what's wrong? You have been acting really weird all day." James finally stated. Riley sniffled, tears starting to run down her cheeks.

"Baby, what's wrong?" James questioned, standing up from the bed. He began to walk towards her, arms open to embrace her, but she stepped away.

"We need to break up." She finally said, looking James in the eye.

Hurt couldn't come close to the emotion on his face.

"Break up?" He inquired quietly. "But Riley, I...I-I don't understand...What did I do?"
