'Excuse me?' My mother asked me.
'You heard me. I'm going to go out with my friends today. I'm not going to hang around a hospital doing nothing for hours. Unlike everyone else, I don't want to live at a hospital.' I say. Me being me, that took a lot of courage to say.
'She told you.' Allison sneered.
'Christine Lillian, you will do as I say as long as you live under my roof.' My mom said in the coldest tone as possible.
'I'm going to hang out with my friends. You never cared before.' I said.
'Cass wasn't sick before.' My mom replied.
'So my life revolves around her?' I asked, this was getting irratating.
'Why can't anyone understand that we need to support her?!' My mom yelled.
'Why should we be a family now? We never were before.' Allsion added.
'That's enough.' My dad said. 'Your mom said no. And that is the end of it. If you go to the beach, you will be grounded for a month, Christine.' My father said.
'Mom, just let her. Please. I don't care if anyone is here.' Cass pleaded. Vanna is quiet as usual.
'The end of it.' My mom snapped . I bite my lip. I was so close to crying.
'I'm sorry, Chris.' Cass said. This is why I like being invisible. I don't say anything, and I don't get hurt. I didn't say anything. I just pulled out my phone and texted JC.
I cant come. My mom said no.
My mom and Vanna were already talking about something else. Everything that had happened, already forgotten.
Why???
My phone beeped. JC had texted. I sighed.
Because I have to be here for Cass.
Beep.
That isnt fair.
I sighed again.
I know.
At least JC understood.
Cass's IV therapy was over and she was so wiped out all she did was sleep. Like I had said earlier, all any of us did was hang around and talk. Now that I think about it, this wasn't the first time I didn't get to do something because of Vanna or Cass. Or even Allison. I really was invisible. And before I didn't mind it, but now it aas getting anoying. I guess that's why Allison gets into so much trouble. It wasn't fair how I was hardly noticed. It wasnt fair how my plans depended on my sisters. And I knew I wasnt to stay quiet any longer.
*********Monday******
I had gone home to take a shower, get some money, and some of Cass's things. When JC showed up at my front door. I wasn't going to turn her away, considering I knew I may not see her much this summer.
'You going to walk to the hospital woth me?' I asked. I had the stuff I was going to bring ready.
'Of course.' JC quiped. Outside, started blabbing on about how unfair my mom was being. I couldnt disagree with her.
'The only reason Gabe ain't here is because he has soccer practice. We totally miss you.' JC said as she twirled a piece of her hair in between her fingers.
'I know honey.' I said.
'How about a sleep over at mine tonight?' JC asked me.
'I'll try.' I said. It had only been a few days but I already missed them a bunch.
'How's the muches doing?' I asked, changing the subject.
'Oh boy, Lucina is finally noticing boys. And man, I didn't know a twelve year old could get that much attention. And Meleca is still pretty quiet. Ma is hoping that when she grows up, she ain't as much of a handful as Jesza and I.' JC says. Lucina is tweleve, as you know, and Meleca is nine. Jesza is seventeen.
'Meleca is so cute.' I said.
'She is. I think she still misses pa though.'
'Do you?'
'Of course. I mean he was my dad. But it was three years ago.'
JC's dad was killed in a car accident three years ago. Meleca was really close to her dad. And she was so young back then.
'Aw honey.' I said softly to JC who just shrugged. She didnt talk about her dad. It hurt too much.
'We need to get going, your mom will pitch a fit if we arent there soon.' JC says. And I hate that she is right.
When we got to the hospital, my mom a as arguing with Allison.
'No you can't go out with your friends Allison. Not when your sister is at the hospital.' My mom replied, her voice as cold as steel. It was almost like my mom was punishing us for Cass being sick. Like it was our fault or something. She had become extremly possesive and controlling. My dad didnt say anything about this though. He just went along with it, like he always did.
'That isn't fair!' Allison screamed.
'Life isn't fair. Especially for your sister.' My mom replied.
'Mom...why can't I just hang out with them for a few hours?' Allison said, exasperated.
'Because I said no. Now stop talking back before you get yourself grounded.' My mom warned.
'Well..know we know the awnser for the sleep over.' JC said quietly.
'Yea. I think so.' I replied softly.
