School wouldn't have been so bad if I had been able to focuse. After school, JC had pratice, so Gabe walked with me to the hospital.

'Cass, why don't we get some coffee?' Gabe asked, sending me a sidelong glance. I defenitly didn't need coffee, I was jittery enough as it was, but I knew that Gabe was buying me time. He knew I was worried about how my mom would react.

I mean, who wouldn't?

Since Cass got sick, my mom has freaked out over me or my sister wanting to hang out with friends. But leaving without asking?

I was screwed.

Mathew had left a few days after Cass was diagnosed, against his will, to go back to Afghanistan where he had been stationed for a few years.

And he was missing all the drama. At least mom couldnt tell him what to do. The military was in charge of that.

Anyway, we stopped at Starbucks and bought small iced coffees. And then we headed back towards the hospital.

Once we got to the entrance, Gabe asked me if I wanted him to walk up with me. And while I would love that, this was something I had to deal with on my own.

Did that mean I want to? Absoulutly not.

But I did it anyway. I walked into the hospital, and made my way to Cass's room by memory.

And a nurse's help.

When I started down the corridor that Cass's room was located on, I heard my parents voices.

So, I did what any sane person would do.

I hid in the corridor closest to the hall. All that mattersd was that I could hear my parents voicies.

'Diane, you need to let the girls hang out with there friends sometimes. They know that Cass is sick, but it isnt their fault she is sick. What can they do waiting around this hospital 24/7? Nothing Diane, nothing.' My dad said tiridly.

'I just want to protect them.' My mom said with a sigh.

'But you are suffocating them. You cant protect them forever.' My dad replied.

'I know. I know. I've been pretty strict and unfair lately.' My mom confessed.

'And now you can do something about that. In the meantime, we are going to be late for the meeting with Casandra's doctors.' My dad said.

I waited at least five minutes before I left the hall and entered Cass's room.

She was asleep on the bed, so I set my stuff down quietly and pulled a chair up beside the bed.

I sat down in the chair and leaned the crutches against the wall.

I then pulled my homework out of my bag, and started to complete it.

"I'm sorry, Cass." I whispered eventually. And even now, I don't quite know what I was sorry for.

A few hours later, Vanna and Allison had invaded Cass's room. Cass was awake by now, and all of us were talking.

None of us mentioned yesterday, we just talked about the random-est things, the easiest things to talk about.

We were all a little worried that our parents hadn't come bask from the meeting with Cass's doctors yet. Back then, I didn't know what that meant.

I thought everything was fine, I was pretty naive.

"It's pretty boring here, so I've had plenty of time to read the books you recommended to me, Vanna." Cass mentioned.

"Really? Did you read the Sarah Dessen books I recommended? Or Everything That Makes You? Or My Sister's Keeper? Jodi Picoult writes the best stories, there are many more you will love. Or what about Second Chance Summer?" Vanna exploded, happily.

Vanna was such a book nerd, trying to get all of us to read her favorites. Or worse, trying to discus them to us, when really I didn't care about what happened in some book I would never read.

Sure, I am smart, but I'm not a reader. The truth is, doing my school work is easy. I love school.

"I read them all." Cass said with a laugh, and I couldn't help but realized how tired she looked.

'Thats awesome. So what specifically made you like them?' Vanna asked, excitedly.

'How do you awnser that question?' Allison mouthed to me, as Cass opened her mouth to awnser our sister.

But the door opening inturupted her.

And looking back, it changed my whole life.

Hey guys! I know this chapter is short, and a long time coming. But when I was writing this chapter, I decided to end the chapter with you wondering what happens next.

Until next time, peace.
