Chapter 9: Finding A Way Back
Disclaimer: read chapter 1
Sam and Kathryn had been going out for a month. Their relationship slowly blossomed with each date.
Elise's double date with Troy, however, wasn't a date in Troy's eyes. When she made a move in the mustang, he made it clear that nothing sexual was going to happen between them, for he was already engaged to another. It crushed Elise's soul a bit. She could never forget how embarrassed she was, especially when Troy forced her to call his fiance and tell her how she tried to come onto him and apologize so that there would be no secrets or misunderstandings. Elise wasn't going to open her heart to anyone again, at least, not for a while.
Every Saturday night, Sam and Kathryn went to a movie or dinner. Wednesday night involved baseball games from Gotham High. Tonight was going to be different.
"So, you plan on doing anything tonight?" Elise asked through the speakerphone.
"Just going out with Sam," Kathryn answered, sitting on the bed to zip her boots.
"Is it Saturday already?" Elise joked. "Where to?"
"The GCN studio for that meet and greet party."
"Oh," disappointment laced in the blonde's voice, expecting to hear something more romantic and exciting. "Meet and greet. That sounds fun... I guess. Are you dressing something fancy?"
Kathy sighed, deciding that it was best to show her than describe it. She snapped then sent a picture of herself to Elise through the phone. Kathryn was wearing a strapless ruffled, red shirt with skinny capris and black leather boots. Her curled hair was styled halfway back with dangling hoop earrings hiding behind the curls.
"Did you get it?"
"Oh yeah. You look hot!"
Kathryn giggled, "Shut up!"
"I'm serious! The boys at GCN will go goo-goo-gaga all over you! You will send Summer Gleeson packing! God, I hate that woman! She always tells lies on television!"
A knock on Kathryn's front door grabbed her attention, not listening to Elise's rant about the reporter.
"Kate? You there?" her date echoed on the other side of the door.
"Hold on," Kathryn begged, picking up the phone to address her friend. "Sam is at the door, Lise. I'll have to call you back."
"Oh, okay. I'll talk to you later. Get some autographs for me!"
"I'll do my best. Bye," Kathryn hung up as she walked down the hall heading for the door. Sam proved to be impatient just by continuously knocking on the door, irritating the doctor.
"I'm coming! I'm coming!" Kathryn cried out. She finally made it to the door and opened it to see Sam standing in a simple navy buttoned dress shirt with a fuzzy textured sweatshirt and khakis.
"Hey, Kit-Kat," Sam greeted her with a small smile.
"Hey!" Kathryn pecked his lips. "I thought we're going to meet up."
"I know, but..." Sam lowered his head, not finishing his sentence.
Kathryn's smile fell when she noticed something off about Sam. Naturally, he would be all smiles to see her, but now, he wasn't looking at her. "Is there something wrong?"
"No. No..." Sam assured her, widening his crooked smile. "You just look... lovely."
Her grin returned, but her eyes squinted in question.
