Cory sent the girl home but she was back by the second half of the day.
"Hey, you feeling better?" He asked as she entered his room for a study hall at the end of the day.
"I was never sick."
"I know that. I just meant better as in being cleaned up and all." Maya nodded.
"Thanks for asking." She forced herself to say. She wasn't his daughter, she thought. She was a troublesome rebel who made his life more difficult and he didn't deserve that. She had to be polite.
Maya sat down and put her head in her hands, falling asleep immediately. She woke to someone nudging her arm. She opened her eyes to find Riley at the desk next to her and Cory on the other side of her, though she couldn't see him, but no one else in the room. She moved her head back down for a second and then sat up, pushing her hair out of her face and stood up.
"Sit." She looked over at Cory. He had a stern look laced with a bit of concern while Riley had a fully concerned look.
"I said sit." She didn't. She only looked at him, defensively.
"How'd you fall asleep on the subway."
"I was just really tired. It was an accident."
"You could have gotten kidnapped."
"But I didn't."
"But you could have."
"Then I guess I'll try harder not to fall asleep."
"I don't want you on it unless you are not alone."
"You can't tell me to do that."
"I can and I did." He said, standing.
"You're not my dad."
"I know that."
"Then leave it alone."
"I'm not gonna leave it alone, we are all concerned about you and what if you do fall asleep, again? You never have any energy anymore."
"Well, it's not gonna happen. Anyone I know would be asleep."
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Why would everyone be asleep?"
"Because sometimes I can't go home until really late." She said, grabbing her bag and leaving the room quick enough so that she couldn't be stopped.
Stay away from them.
