Cory reported that he suspected that Maya was being bullied but the school couldn't do much because Maya would only say that she had fallen down the stairs. It was killing all of her friends as they sat in the meeting with the vice principal after school on Friday, watching this happen.
"Don't worry, this will be brief." She said. Maya was staring at the ground.
"Let's start with Katy."
"I have seen two injures but she had claimed them both accidents and hasn't said anything about school recently."
"Cory."
"Same." He said, leaving the part about her crying to Lucas for Lucas to tell.
"Farkle."
"Same."
"Riley."
"Same as well as Lucas asking her once if she had been bullied."
"What did she say?"
"She did not answer."
"Lucas?"
"She said that It's getting worse and I can't protect her."
"Maya? What did you mean by that?" Maya shrugged her shoulders, looking very distant.
"Thank You all for telling me what you know. You may leave now. Maya, stay." No one moved. "Do you mind if they stay?"
"It's not gonna make a difference. I told you, I fell down the stairs." She was so quiet that it seemed like she was speaking to herself and her voice was flat and unamused.
"This is the second time it was reported that you might have been bullied. I can promise you that if you tell me, it will get better." Maya started laughing, lightly.
"Did you tell that to Caitlin?" She said, finally looking up, tears in her eyes. Cory and the Vice principle looked down.
"You know about that." Said the vice principal.
"Who's Caitlin?" Asked Riley, looking back and fourth between her father and the vice principal.
"How do you know about that?" Asked the principle.
"It's only been five years. It's not like no one remembers."
"Who's Caitlin?" She repeated.
"She killed herself." Said Cory. "She got bullied so bad that she couldn't take it anymore."
"Did she tell anyone?" They nodded, sadly.
"We have a better system now. We can make it better. At the time, we didn't really know what to do." Maya just shook her head.
"You're afraid." Said Lucas. She stared at the ground and spoke clearly.
"I have nothing to be afraid of. I have nothing to tell. I'm not being bullied, so why would it get worse?" She stood up and walked out.
