"You're going to love it here. The family has friendly neighbors and a giant yard."
"Mmmmhhhhhhmmmmmmmm."
She glanced over at me quickly, not wanting to take her eyes off the road. Marcy was a terrible counselor, but she was nothing if not a careful driver.
"Your new school is only a ten minute walk, plus there is a park only three miles away from the house."
"Yeah, yeah. Great."
"It has a skate park."
I jerked up, stopping my moody staring out the window. Marcy had a look on her face that told me she knew that the skate park would interest me. I frowned, angry about being played as she pulled to a stop at a red light. She put on her blinker and turned to me.
"I have a good feeling about this place, Mavey. The family is super nice and they are simply ecstatic that you're going to be moving in. Please promise me you'll make this work."
No matter how many times I told her not to call me 'Mavey', she still did. I let it slid for now though, more for her sake than mine. I didn't reply and the blinker a steady beat in our silence. The light turned green and she turned right, giving me a long look as the car turned onto the road.
"Please, Mavis. Please make this work. This will be your sixth foster home in seven years and soon it'll be too late for you."
I swallowed heavily. No one wanted to be told it was too late for them. Not even me. My throat felt thick as I nodded, fingering a string on my hoodie.
"I promise."
I meant my words, but Marcy just looked at my with pity and turned into a driveway. She didn't believe me, but if I was her I wouldn't either.
"I really promise."
