Emma's POV:

"David! How was your day at work?

"Fine. What are we having for dinner?"

"Mac and cheese."

"Wait, why? You know I hate that stuff."

"It's Mavis's favorite food."

His face twisted slightly and I could already see the pain starting to form in the back of his eyes.

"She's really sweet."

I tried to get him to change his mind, but I could see that he still didn't want her to be living with us.

"Please be civil with her, okay?"

He sighed and I rubbed his arm in what I hoped was a comforting way.

"It's going to be alright. You'll see, but just please be nice to her."

He sighed again and walked out of the kitchen, leaving me alone to finish dinner, though I heard him mutter just before he was out of earshot.

"Fine."

Mavis's POV:

I heard voices wafting up through the floorboard but I couldn't decipher what they were saying. The voices talked for a few moments before heavy footsteps started up the stairs. They paused slightly at my door as if the person was about to knock but thought the better of it before continuing down the hall to where the master bedroom was. I watched the door for a moment after the footsteps receded before popping my earbuds back in and laid back on my violet bedspread. I let the rich voice of Reba McEntire fill my ears and I let myself drown in it. I didn't need to care about my own problems as long as I had my music.

"If you love me, don't you be afraid

To look in my eyes and open up the gates

Then watch me ride beneath a newborn sun

Just like them horses

When it's time to run."

Reba was one of those people who you had to idolize whether you liked country music or not. I had always grown up listening to her music and every song she sung always had a story. One of my favorite was a song called "Because of you."  I hadn't listened to it in a long time because it caused memories I didn't want to resurface but I had to admit, it was a good song nonetheless. My door opened suddenly and I jumped as Emma stuck her head through the opening.

"Mavis, we're going to eat dinner now."

"Um, okay."

She gave me a tight lipped smile before closing my door again. I shut my phone off and made my way downstairs, stopping in the bathroom to wash my hands before sitting down at the table. I was almost a bit excited about dinner when David walked in and sat down. Oh joy.

A/N:

Hi my little strawberry shortcakes! I apologize for the short chapter. Its only meant to be a filler before the fun starts, as in Mavey meets Ollie.  The gif up top is there to tease you because I'm currently starving and want mac and cheese and the video is the song above. Remember the song "Because of you" because it will be important in the end. Bye for now!
