-Dylan POV-
The TV was on, but the volume was low enough that it was basically background noise. Tyler and I were sprawled across the living room — him in the recliner, me stretched out on the couch with one arm behind my head.
"So," Tyler said, glancing at me with that stupid grin on his face, "how did last night go?"
I already knew where this was headed. I laughed. "We didn't have sex, if that's what you're asking."
He raised his hands. "Okay, okay. But did y'all at least kiss? Feel on each other?"
"Lower your voice," I muttered, shaking my head.
"Yeah. We kissed. And stuff."
"Stuff, huh?" he said, leaning forward like I'd just handed him gold.
I tried not to smile, but I couldn't help it.
It wasn't even about the physical part. It was the way she looked at me when she laughed. The way she held my hand like it wasn't something casual. Like it meant something.
"Her brother came to visit today," I said, turning my attention back to the TV even though I wasn't watching it.
"Oh yeah? Did you meet him?"
"Not yet. I will eventually."
And for some reason, that thought made my stomach tighten a little.
Meeting the brother always means something. It means you're not temporary.
Tyler studied me for a second.
"Are you ready to be in a new relationship?" he asked carefully. "I know you just got out of one—"
"Yeah, Tyler. I'm ready," I cut in, sitting up slightly. "I wouldn't be going on a fourth date with her if I wasn't."
That was the truth. I don't do fourth dates unless I'm serious.
He threw his hands up in defense. "I'm just looking out for you."
I sighed, then nodded. "I know. And I appreciate it."
What I didn't say was that I was scared.
Not of her.
Of messing it up.
Of comparing her to my ex without meaning to.
Of finally wanting something real again.
I leaned back into the couch and stared at the TV, even though my mind was somewhere else.
"Don't screw this up," Tyler muttered.
I smirked. "I won't."
At least, I hoped I wouldn't.
