-Dylan POV-
A Week Later
I was halfway to Jessica's apartment before I realized my hands were gripping the steering wheel tighter than usual.
Relax.
It's just her brother.
Still — first impressions matter.
I pulled into her building's parking lot and parked in my usual spot. I turned the engine off and sat there for a second, staring at the entrance.
Then I grabbed my phone and texted her.
Me: I'm downstairs.
Jessica: Already downstairs.
Me: Ok.
That was fast.
I glanced up just in time to see them walking out of the building.
They were laughing about something. She lightly shoved his shoulder, and he nudged her back.
Seeing her like that — relaxed, happy — did something to me.
I stepped out of the car and shut the door.
"Hey," I said, walking around to meet them.
Jessica smiled and wrapped her arms around me. "Hi."
Her hug was quick, but it grounded me.
I looked over at him.
"So you must be Cameron."
He studied me for half a second before high-fiving me. "Yup. And you're Dylan O'Brien."
I laughed. "In the flesh."
I gestured to myself dramatically, and Jessica rolled her eyes.
We all laughed, and I gave him another quick high-five.
Okay.
So far, so good.
We got into the car — Jessica in the passenger seat, Cameron in the back. I adjusted the mirror slightly, catching Cameron's eyes in it for a second.
He didn't look threatening.
But he did look observant.
"So," I said, starting the engine, "y'all ready?"
"Yup," they both answered at the same time.
I smirked and pulled out of the parking spot, heading down the block.
I could feel it though.
This wasn't just a trip to the park.
This was an evaluation.
And I intended to pass.
