-Dylan POV-
I'm walking toward Jessica's door, and I'm actually nervous.
What if she says no?
I know what happened before... but I want her.
I reach the door, ready to ring the bell, when I hear voices inside. I lean my ear against the door.
A little girl's voice.
"So are you dating Dylan or not?"
"For the last time, Casandra — no," Jessica says, laughing.
Casandra?
"Well why not?"
"None of your business," Jessica replies.
I straighten up quickly when I hear footsteps.
I ring the doorbell and step back.
The door unlocks and swings open.
"Hey," Jessica says, smiling.
And for a second, I forget everything I planned to say.
"Hi," I reply, looking her over. "You look nice."
She's wearing a black crop top and a high-low skirt that moves when she shifts her weight. Red lipstick. Hair down and wavy.
"Thank you," she says softly.
I hug her and kiss her cheek before stepping inside.
I sit on the couch, rubbing my palms on my jeans.
"So... what's up?" she asks, sitting beside me.
"I wanted to talk to you about something."
"Something like what?" She gently grabs my face so I'll look at her.
I take her hands in mine instead.
"For the last month, we've been chilling... hanging out."
"Yeah..." she says carefully.
"And we've been getting closer. And I'm starting to like you. Actually—" I exhale. "I've liked you since date number two."
She blinks.
"And I want us to continue."
"Continue... going on dates?" she asks.
"Yeah. But more than that. I want you to be mine."
Her expression shifts.
"I know you haven't dated since you were sixteen. But I'm not that dude."
She slowly pulls her hands from mine and stands, walking toward the kitchen.
My stomach drops.
I lean back against the couch and close my eyes.
"Dyl—"
"It's okay," I cut in quietly. "I get it. I'll... I'll go."
I stand up.
"No, wait," she says quickly, walking back toward me.
She reaches for my hands, and I take them.
We stand there in silence.
"I know you're not that dude," she says softly. "I wasn't comparing you to him. Trust me... you're way better looking."
I laugh under my breath, finally looking up at her.
"My brother said I should give you a chance. And my sister won't stop pestering me about us dating," she says, gently swinging our hands.
