4  weeks before

ALEX:

Where is he?

I went to the find food, I told him to stay! Why didn't he listen! I will find you, Oliver, I will! Be strong for me!

Please.

The nearest house that I could raid was miles away, I had no choice but to leave him in the cave we found in a abounded zoo, I thought it was the safest place to leave him.

Our little cave has been our house for the past three weeks, Its in the old bear closer so the gates protect us from any Infected people, In fact Oliver hadn't seen a single zombie since we got here.

Oliver made a carpet and a curtain for our "door" out of leaves, I think he made it to make him feel like he's at home he also hung up a picture of the whole family when we were young and happy. We went to to the nearest empty house and took all their packeted and can food, pillows and bowls. We made our selves a little doll house with the pillows on the floor that we sleep on and the bowls we can eat from. And we had each other, We were happy, well, As we could be at a time like this. Oliver and I would go to the pond and swim, bathe and wash our cloths.

A week ago we went to the pond for the first time.

"do you think we could go in?" Oliver says with too much caution for a nine year old.

"Uh-"

"We haven't had a proper shower for weeks now and its to dangerous to have a shower at a house..." Oliver goes on explaining himself.

"I know Oliver, Its okay just let me check it out first" I had to interrupt him, It was to painful for me to hear an nine year old begging for a shower.

"Really!? Thank you, thank you!"

I dip my toe into the chilled lake water and watch the ripples that come from it, I slowly get in the dark, muggy pond, One foot then the next, my lower body then my higher till it was up to my neck, It was deeper than it looked, which makes me wonder what's in here, waiting for us, starving like the rest of the world.

"okay I think you can get in now"

I see the joy on his face turn it to caution or maybe even fear.

"Oliver? Its fine you can come in."

"uh.. okay"

He starts getting closer and closer to the edge of the lake and hesitates for a second before splashing in, with his whole body at once.

Once he was in I skid my hand on top of the water and splash him in the face.

He freezes for a split second, fear washing over his face, Then splashes me back with double the force, Before we knew it we were have a water fight

"Hahah"

Oliver is laughing, That Made the risk, Everything I did worth it!

He was having fun, for the first time in months, He's actually smiling, genuinely! I start laughing as well and with out realizing we were laughing hysterical at everything we went through like it was a movie we just watched.

The sun was starting to set and I knew we would have to get to our cave before dark,

"hey Oliver, we have to wash our cloths now and get going"

Saying it in a cheerful voice not to mess up the mood.

"oh come on do we have to?"

I give him a apologetic look, And he knows he has to be mature now and not act his age.
