The bed was surprisingly soft and cosy.
I guessed that the cold weather didn't effect vampires as I felt underneath me and squished the three thick duvet covers, each one more flowery than the next.
"At least it's clean" I thought as I laid back and took a deep breath.
My mind drifted back to the inconceivable events that occurred earlier and I put my hands up to my face, slightly perplexed by the magnitude of power I felt surge through my body, unlike any episode I had experienced in the past.
My hands were still shaking and grazed from the fall earlier as I examined my palms, searching for a logical explanation but there were none.
Just vivid memories of bizarre situations with similar unexplainable outcomes from my childhood.
It was like a black and white flashback in an old movie.
Crackling scenes appeared in front of me then fading away before I could make sense of them, allowing another memory to step into its place.
My mind opened the door to a moment, when I was four years old, and I started to remember when I first encountered this electrifying gift as this memory played out fully.
Raw feelings of terror, shock and the need to find light consumed my senses. Trembling with a fear of the unknown, I was transported back into my four year old body and found myself cowering under my bed, afraid of the shadows as I waited in my bedroom, while my auntie investigated the fuse box in the basement,
"Aunt Sofi" I shouted from my hiding place. My long auburn ringlets covered my slightly freckled face and I peered out cautiously to assess the dark space.
She didn't answer.
Mustering all the courage I could, I slowly crawled out from underneath the bed and crept to the window.
There was no noise from the street, which was strange because usually we could hear cars, using our road as a shortcut to get to the main dual carriageway but tonight there were no signs of life and a dead silence flooded the road.
I carefully pulled back the stripy yellow curtains, trying not to make too much noise, to see the whole street in darkness,
"It's just a blackout, Lu. Don't worry, the electricians will be coming to fix it soon" my aunt promised as she re-entered my bedroom with her yellow tool belt slouched across her waist.
She checked the electrics in my bedroom before giving me a comforting cuddle.
I was shaking like a leaf and couldn't move from my spot,
"Shall I go get us some milk and cookies and we can read one of your favourite books whilst we wait?" she tried, "I'll go get some candles and it'll be like we're camping again".
I nodded reluctantly and jumped into the bed, covering myself with my duvet protector.
Closing my eyes, I prayed for the shadows to go away and imagined the street and house being filled with light again.
The air began to feel dense and the silence became deafening.
I squeezed my eyes shut and covered them with my small, shivering hands,
"No shadows pwease" I squeaked, unable to say please properly.
My breath became strained with anxiety and I started to whimper as thoughts of the boogie man tainted my delicate mind,
"Pwease go away" I begged the taunting thoughts, hoping my courage would make a much needed reappearance.
As I panted my last plea, I could feel some movement on my back and then above my head. Shivering with terror, I refused to move or make a sound.
