BAM!
A bullet shot right past Kat's left ear, barely missing it but slightly grazing her ear. She continued running, her eyes locked on the masked gunman. The abandoned streets acted like a maze under the dark sky. The gunman's was around twenty metres ahead of her but she was catching up.
Katerina Starling had joined the Child-Agent-Network-Division-Investigating-Evil (C.A.N.D.I.E) when she was six years old. Ever since then she had worked herself up to be one of the youngest high ranking agents in the world. She was also one the most famous crime fighters the agency had.
Kat was chasing up a lead on the underground terrorist group infamously known as the Evil Eye, the gunman, formerly known as Gray Wilkinson was one of the Eye's newest members. Gray had threatened an attack on a local high school a week prior before firing bullets and taking hostages.
"I heard a gunshot, Kat are you okay?" Scott practically yelled through her earpiece
"I'm fine, the bullet just grazed my ear, but I've lost Gray" Kat could barely see in the darkened streets
"Ok, I pulled up the security cameras from your location; he is on the move two blocks ahead of you, run about twenty metres forward and then take a right turn."
"Got it" She followed Scott's directions until she could see the gunman in front of her. They turned into an alleyway which lead to a brick wall, a dead end.
Under the dim street lights Kat could now see Gray Wilkinson more closely. He was wearing tattered black sneakers with faded black jeans. He had a black hoodie on and a black beanie hung loosely over his shaggy black hair. His face had a stern expression however looked no older than eighteen.
"Aren't you a little young to work for criminal masterminds?" Kat yelled over the freezing cold wind
"Aren't you a little young to be working for government agencies" a cold smile spread across his face
"Aha very funny" Kat laughed sarcastically
"You're Gray Wilkinson right? You are under arrest for attempted murder, acts of terrorism, manslaughter, assault, may I go on?" she held up her gun, pointing it in his direction
It was his turn to laugh but it was cold and heartless
"Do you really think that your gun can kill me?"
"Trust me Emo head, I don't need the gun" she said sternly
As soon as the words escaped her mouth Gray lifted his gun before shooting three bullets. Time stopped for a brief moment as Kat dropped her gun. She raised her hands, closed her eyes and summoned the cold breeze. The bullets stopped in mid-air as Kat held it in place, controlling the winds she managed to stop the bullets right in front of her.
It was not difficult, Kat was an Elementian. An advanced race of people who possessed extraordinary powers, they could harness, control and form the natural elements of Earth. The Elementian's come from a distant land called Element. Shrouded by ancient magic, only those with advanced powers have the capabilities to travel to and forth Element. Kat was one of them.
With the power of the winds at her palm she flipped the bullets so they were now facing Gray; he looked at her with a cruel smile as if urging her to kill him.
She let go of the winds, sending three bullets charging towards Gray Wilkinson. He lifted his right hand, a dark purple ball of matter formed in front of him. He pushed is hand forward, the purple light engulfed the bullets turning them to ice. The bullets hit the ground shattering into a hundred shards of ice.
"You're Elementian" Kat stated with a look of disgust
He chuckled softly
"Well done Katerina Margaret Starling"
Kat cringed at the sound of her full name, she had not been called Margaret since she last visited Element but that was two years earlier.
"Well if you are aware of whom I am then I hope you realise I have the power to arrest you under the authority of Element. So unless you want to rot in an Elementian jail cell I suggest you come with me peacefully"
"Nice try princess but I don't think your puny jail cells can hold me" A sneer still plastered on his face
"And why is that? Those jail cells are designed to hold even the most powerful Elementian light sorcerers"
Gray's face turned into pure disgust
"Don't you dare compare me to your 'oh so powerful' light wizards. My mistress is the Lord of The Dark Elements" He yelled with fiery anger in his voice
"Wow so original. How long did it take to come up with that one" Kat spoke with a bored tone
"Enough! Your words bore me Daughter of Light" He raised his hand summoning another ball of dark matter the size of himself
"No!" Kat screamed as she fired a bullet at him
The bullet hit his right shoulder. Gray's body fell onto the ground; he had focused so much on opening a portal to Element that he couldn't deflect the bullet. The portal closed leaving an unconscious Gray lying on the ground.
"Wow that was intense, I'm sending a helicopter to your coordinates" Scott laughed through her earpiece putting a smile on her face
"Are you ok" he asked after he noticed Kat's silence
"Yeah I'm fine, I've dealt with worse" Kat said with a small smile
But she wasn't fine; she couldn't stop thinking about what Gray had called her, Daughter of Light? The last time she heard that name was when she was six years old. She had a faint memory of when she was younger, a time before the agency. She was in her bedroom, in a palace, on top of a hill. There was a view of an ocean and a cobblestone village that lead down the hill. She was sitting on her bed reading a picture book about people who lived in a world without magic. How silly she thought that was at the time.
A lady walked into her room, Kat didn't recognise her. Her long hair was scarlet red and reached just above her waist, she wore a long black gown studded with black sequins, on her neck was a gold necklace with a ruby pendent. Her face was beautiful, dangerous, the kind that leaves you mystified at the sight of her. The lady spoke with a soothing voice, like fire crackling in a hearth
"I've finally found you Daughter of Light, destiny revealed to me that you will destroy me in the future and continue with your rightful place as heir to the throne of Element. We can't change the past but we can change the future. And I intend that you will burn to the ground along with your precious kingdom. Then can The Dark Elements, the true Elementians, rule over our sacred land"
And that was all Kat could remember before the explosions went off from outside and her bedroom erupting into flames.
