Chapter 4:
“Lets go on this ride, Claire. It looks… scary.” Rose sat cross legged looking at the meri-go-round. She didn’t like scary rides as she called them.
“I’m going to go get some food. You and Justin go and line up though, have fun.” I gave her a look that stared hers down and she gave in. My plan was finally falling into place, and what better than to send them on a romantic ride together. I watched as they left and silently laughed at myself. I stood and went to stand in the line, I really was hungry, that part wasn’t part of the plan. Rose only looked back once, but her face held nothing but happiness, so I knew that this moment was going to stay with her for years to come. At least I thought years, probably until another guy fancied her heart, who knew when that would be? She liked Justin, liked him A LOT. In fact, liked was a bit of an understatement! It was my role, as best friend, to make sure that he was included in our plans, for whatever reason. Sometimes they didn’t work out though. Last time I had invited him to my birthday party a few months ago and my invitation had been presented in a hilarious manner. I had bought a box of chocolates and stuck the invitation on the front. Want to know what it said?
“You should come to my birthday party, there will be more of these there, plus,
your secret admirer will be there. Come along, it will be fun! Claire xo”
I don’t know whether he thought his lover was me, but it didn’t seem like he had. He came and Rose, being Rose, was delighted to see him attend. It was kind of crummy when you think about it. A box of chocolates? There will be more of this there? How lame! Couldn’t I have come up with anything better? I mean, seriously!
I made my way up the creeping line after what felt like a century... ordered, and waited for my order to be cooked and served. I couldn’t wait for my dagwood dog, the delicious batter covered sausage that would melt in my mouth, and that was all mine. Rose and Justin had ordered something different, let alone, mentioning that Justin had ordered two things, which was a bit weird because they were both very big servings, but at least I knew my sausage would be mine and no one else’s.
“Order five?” the canteen worker swept his eyes through the crowd, and again shouted over the noise of the screaming ride victims. I raised my hand and made my way over to the man holding my food.
“Thanks, do you have any bags?” he held four dishes and I only had two hands. How was I going to get this back to our little picnic area? He shook his head and I sighed trying to balance the food on my arms and failing miserably. All I needed now was to be bumped by a passing citizen. Great, knowing me, that was bound to happen. “Whoa, sorry.” I said trying to dodge the passing people. It’s a lot harder than you think! Come on, Claire, I told myself, The people climbing Everest carry a lot more than this. Just one foot in front of the other.
I took a step forward, and the top plate slipped out of my hands. One thought flew through my head as I watched it fall: Oh, shit.
Then, just before the plate hit the ground, a set of tan hands shot out and caught it. I looked up to see who had saved my lunch, and my eyes were met by none other than him.
“Uh, thanks,” I said, looking down at his face, “Wanna’ make out?” I suddenly realised what had left my mouth. He wouldn’t remember, would he? What the eff was that?
“Uh, what?”
“NOTHING…” The word came so naturally to my lips, although I had to force them out, I really did want to make out with him. Sure, I was a try hard, but was it really my fault to fall in love? “So, are you here by yourself, or are you meeting someone?” I really hoped he would be here by himself, because then I could invite him to Rose’s party and we could hang out.
