The thing that sucks most about being human, other than imminent death, was having no magic. Instead, humans had weapons and planning, which was so much work. By the time we left the apartment, the hostage situation at the hotel made Saturday night news. For almost an hour the FBI, Swat team, and the NYC police department tried to get inside, but Hades put a magic barricade on the doors, making it impossible.
Fortunately for us, we had Hermes on our side, so we didn't have to worry about magic locks, or real ones for that matter. It was unfortunate his magic wasn't strong enough to entirely take down Hades. It'd save us a lot of trouble. I wasn't sure what Hades intended on doing to the hostages, but I speculated he was using them as bait. He was luring me to him. He didn't want to chase me down. Regrettably, his plan to draw me out was working because we were headed his way.
Let me tell you right now—we weren't a Swat team. Instead of guns and tasers, Joey had her broom, Spencer had a pan, and I had a galaxy grabber. Yes, I'm aware, you can't take down a God with a child's toy but everyone else got the good stuff and Hermes refused to share his powders with me. Since we couldn't kill them, we opted for a defensive position. We also doubled our layer of clothes, so we'd be less suspectable to arrows. Honestly, we looked like the start of a bad joke. The only thing that was in our favor, was the discovery Spencer had a car all this time. He didn't tell us until after we wasted ten minutes trying to flag down a cab.
Now, we were speeding through nighttime traffic as I gave him an earful.
"I can't believe you didn't tell us about the car! We're on a rescue mission, information like that is crucial to its success!" I grumbled as I gripped the armrests for dear life.
Rolling his eyes, he zig-zagged between cabs. "Joey didn't say anything either! We were busy worrying about what you're getting us into. Sorry transportation didn't come to mind. Anyways, it's not technically our car, it's our mom's," He said as he went up on the sidewalk to pass a car and peeled back out onto the road.
''You're going to kill someone or get pulled over! At least speed on the road!" Joey shouted, gripping the bar above her head as Hermes turned green.
For the first-time ever, he smirked as he looked in the rearview mirror. "I may lack in other areas, but I'm a fantastic driver Joanne," He informed proudly before pushing the gas petal to the floor. "Anyways, this is an emergency! The Soldier Gals need us!"
"Yeah, about that, how many hostages are we planning on rescuing exactly?" Joey asked as she tightened her seat.
"At least the girls and maybe Todd. We'll get them out first then come back for everyone else." I had no clue how exactly we were going to do that, but I knew we'd find a way. As a group, we were good at improvising in tricky situations. The most important thing was getting into the hotel and finding my bow and quiver. The rest we'll make up.
"Turn around the bend here, this road should take you to the hotel!" Joey announced as she pointed towards the turn frantically.
With a tilt, Spencer sharply turned down the road. Almost immediately then, he had to slam on his breaks to avoid hitting a police car in front of us. "Shit!" He yelled as the car's tires squealed against the asphalt and stopped a fraction of an inch away from the SUV.
"Spencer!" We scolded once the moment of danger passed. I was surprised the near collision didn't turn our hair white.
"Shut up, will you? It's not like I hit it!" He yelled back. Taking a shaky breath, he put the car in reverse and parked it along the sidewalk before pulling the keys out of the ignition.
Desperate to be on solid ground, we stumbled out on shaky legs. In doing so, we realized how many onlookers there were. The building was surrounded. If we wanted to get in without getting caught, we'd have to be slicker than strolling inside. If we could even get that close. There was yellow tape everywhere and cops managing the growing crowd. They weren't letting anyone through.
