I really wish I wasn't a nice person.
A self-respecting girl wouldn't have given him a second thought, but the moment I saw him freeze, I saw the desperation to disappear. It was the same look I've seen in my mirror plenty of times before. He was lost. Mostly because he was copying the girl dancing in the audience, but I sensed something deeper. So, with that in mind, I decided to help him. Surprisingly, it was fun, and after walking away, I felt genuinely happy.
When I rejoined the girls behind the stage, Amber was the first to approach me. "What was that?" She gasped as she danced in place excitedly.
"I don't know...he just...I felt bad for him. That's all," I said with the shake of my head as we made our way back to Harley. It was rare I approached guys, especially ones who were apparently interested. I couldn't help but worry Beats Dynasty had a hand in this. Any minute now, I feared one of them would jump out with a camera and mock me for thinking someone genuinely liked me. Men are visual. If my father said it, it had to true. Right?
"That was sweet. Though, I'm a little surprised you did it after the trouble he caused," Elena said, clearly wanting me to say more.
Enthusiastically, Lennon skipped around me. "He's cute, like super cute! You should talk to him again!" She insisted, evidently unbothered by the schematics of the situation like Elena.
Britt shook her head in disagreement. "No way, I recognize that stalker. He was the guy at the house earlier. I wouldn't talk to him anymore if I were you," She insisted.
Elena nodded in agreement. "Exactly!" The abnormal severity of her tone was surprising. "You were supposed to be make him look bad, not fall into his arms! We should go back and embarrass him all over again so that asshole doesn't come back." She scolded.
"Elena!" I scoffed, completely baffled. Even when she was pissed, she wasn't one to push for revenge. "He said sorry," I said as I hugged myself and looked between the girls. "And I didn't fall into his arms. Sure, he's cute, but that has nothing to do with it,"
"Why wouldn't it? You haven't built up a resistance to male charm," she murmured, making the rest of us abruptly stop. That was definitely out of character for her. In all our years of friendship, Elena had never taken an real jab at me.
I was speechless. I wasn't sure whether to cry or storm away. All I could do was stand there and take a shaky breath as every inch of my body felt ten times bigger.
Protectively, the triplets stepped between us and surrounded her. "Penny isn't some ninny who falls in love with every guy she meets, she has standards! If he apologized to her and she believed him, then that's her business. If she wants to dance with him let them dance," Gwen said with nods of agreement from her sisters.
"Yeah! She was being kind, we could learn a thing or two from her," Stacey chimed in.
"You need to apologize Elena, that wasn't cool," Cece insisted, before rushing to my side with a reassuring smile. "Plenty of guys like you sweet girl, you're as charming as they come,"
Unamused, Elena rolled her eyes. "You know I'm right! She doesn't know guys like we do! Forgive me for thinking the one she finally approaches isn't worth it," she groused, unwilling to back down.
Deciding I couldn't handle another minute of everyone arguing, I exhaled sharply. "Just let it go. He's a fanboy who tried to make a gesture that went wrong. I don't like him, and he doesn't like me. There's nothing to argue about." I was in a rush to sit down as a hot flash made me burn up. Elena was right, she didn't need to apologize.
When we got back to the sitting area, Harley was propped up on the couch talking to Todd. Upon noticing us, they ceased their conversation and she looked up at me with a smile. "I have one word for you ladies, wow!" She declared. "When Penny got in his face, I almost lost my shit! We should do dance battles more often!"
