"Mum, Dad! Hurry!" I hollered excitedly as an James' owl, Zeus, swooped in through our window the next morning.
"It's a letter from James!"
I tore it open eagerly and read out loud.
Dear Mum, Dad and Lily,
How are you guys doing? Al and I just arrived at Hogwarts. You should have seen the look on Al's face when he and the other first years entered the Great Hall. His mouth fell open and wouldn't shut for ages. Honestly, I was about to bring him to the Hospital Wing! Btw, good news! Al and Rosie were both sorted into Gryffindor! You wouldn't believe how relieved Al looked. Like seriously, you wouldn't. You just can't.
Oh, one more thing. Scorpius Malfoy was also sorted into Gryffindor. For some reason, he seemed quite happy about that. You'd think he would've been disappointed. Anyway, Al and Scorpius are now friends. You know honestly, he's not that bad. You know, he's actually quite nice sometimes. Rosie seems to try her best to keep away from him, but since she hangs around Al and I quite a lot, it is a little hard to stay away from Scorpius entirely. Don't worry though, I'll take care of both of them. Trust me, I'm awesome at that! If Scorpius tries anything I promise I'll hex his pants off.
Don't miss us too much, will ya?
Love,
James
P.S. Al says hi
P.P.S. Lily, you'd better be in Gryffindor too!
"Albus was sorted into Gryffindor!" I cheered, waving the letter about. "So was Rose! That's brilliant!"
"Yes, yes, that's great..." My father replied vaguely.
I glanced at him with surprise. "Aren't you pleased?"
"Albus is friends with Malfoy?" My father said, shaking his head in wonder.
I stared at him incredulously. "Is that what's bothering you? Come on, daddy."
My dad looked at me sheepishly. "I just can't believe a Malfoy was sorted into Gryffindor though. I don't think it's ever happened before. After all it had never occurred to me that it was even possible." He gave an amused snort.
I shrugged. "James says he's nice."
My father raised an eyebrow. "Well, I guess we'll see about that, won't we?" He seemed slightly disbelieving.
I fell down onto the couch, wondering which house I would be in when I finally went to Hogwarts. For the first time in wizarding history, a Malfoy was sorted into Gryffindor.
I wonder if that meant something? Scorpius Malfoy was friends with Al, and due to our complicated family history, I wasn't surprised at my father's rather unenthusiastic response. I bet Uncle Ron wouldn't be too happy about that either. I couldn't help but let out a sigh of exasperation. If only they could stop behaving like fussy beavers, squabbling over the structure of their dams. After all, adults are sometimes described as stubborn planks of wood, aren't they?

"Albus and James are friends with a Malfoy?" Uncle Ron spluttered as we told him the news, "And Rosie is hanging around them as well?" He looked absolutely horrified. Hugo and I tried not to giggle at his petrified expression. But it was hard not to, as whenever Uncle Ron was scared or horrified, his face would scrunch up until his nose disappeared .... No I'm just kidding, that was a scary thought...
My mother sighed. "Look," she started, "Draco may have done some terrible things in the past -"
"- Plenty," Uncle Ron interrupted, rolling his eyes.
"- But that doesn't necessarily mean that his son would grow up to make the same mistakes he did. From what I've heard, he's trying to teach his son to be a better person."
"Come on!" Uncle Ron looked at her with a slightly infuriated look on his face. "He's a Malfoy! A Malfoy, Ginny!" He added emphasis on the word Malfoy, as if fearing my mother didn't understand the true meaning behind the "cursed word" Malfoy.
"I am aware of that," My mother replied icily. "However you can't simply judge a person by their name and certainly not by the actions of their ancestors, just like how you can't judge a book by its cover, Ron."
"But don't you get it, Ginny? He's a Malfoy..." Uncle Ron repeated, looking dumbfounded. My mother shot him a glare, and immediately, he changed tack.
"Do you really expect that after many generations, the Malfoys will be able to change their habits?"
"Anything's possible," my mother folded her arms stubbornly. And I had to agree.
Uncle Ron still wouldn't give in though. He leaned forward, seemingly trying his best to get his point across to my mother, however rather unsuccessfully. "In case you've forgotten, Draco was also a Death Eater, not just his father. Don't you remember how he insulted our family, Ginny? Time after time, he came to us just to insult us as well as Harry. Do you remember my second year and all that ruckus concerning the Chamber of Secrets? Do you know how many times he went and called Hermione a -"
"-Ron!" My mother interrupted sharply. "That's enough." She jerked her head in the direction of the couch, where Hugo and I were sitting. "Draco has changed, Ron. That was all in the past. I suggest you drop it this instant."
"Right," Uncle Ron mumbled, "Sorry." My mother held him by the arm, and whilst muttering, dragged them both into a room, where the door was shut with a sharp bang. Hugo and I were left sitting on the couch, rather gobsmacked by my mom's sudden change of mood. Whatever had happened there?
