"Lily, wake up!"
A familiar voice urgently pulled me out from my slumber. I looked up and blinked blearily, rubbing my eyes. "Roxy?"
My cousin, Roxanne Weasley, smiled and playfully prodded my cheek. "You fell asleep as soon as you got here, you lackadaisical sloth."
"What on earth does that even mean? Please don't start using big fancy terms on me as soon as I wake up! You've probably used it incorrectly too. Also, do you know how mentally taxing the sorting ceremony was?" I replied with a slight shake of my head as I glanced around the room. It was still dark.
"What time is it?"
"Almost midnight." Roxanne tugged at my robes. "Come on, the party's still going on if you wanna have some fun."
Feeling a burst of energy course through my body, I jumped off the bed in excitement. "I'm in."
"Great, let's go!" Roxanne grabbed my wrist and shoved me towards the spiral staircase. Together, we descended down the many steps of Gryffindor Tower at lightning speed, finally reaching the Gryffindor common room - which at this hour was still packed with students.
"Hey, it's Lily!"
I turned to see my brother James bounding towards me, a huge smile plastered on his face, and Roxanne patted my arm, leaving me to catch up with him. Registering his outstretched arms just a little too late, I found myself engulfed in a bear hug by my brother, who ruffled my hair a little too enthusiastically, as the long strands of my bed hair began to float upwards once again.
"How's my favourite sister doing?" He exclaimed with delight.
"I'm your only sister, James." I stated very matter-of-factly as I ducked out from underneath his arms and smoothed down my now unruly red hair.
"That's the point," he grinned at me. "Congratulations, you made it into Gryffindor! I always knew you could do it. Albus, on the other hand..."
"Hey!" We heard the indignant reply as Albus marched over with Scorpius by his side. "Whoever thought I wouldn't get into Gryffindor?"
"You did," James smirked. "Remember how worried you were on the day of your sorting?"
He crouched down to a height way too short to be Albus', and began a most terrible high-pitched squealing impersonation of his voice, while simultaneously pretending to bawl his eyes out, making the wailing noises of a baby. "Nooo I won'tttt be in Slytherinnnn!"
"You...you dung beetle." Albus muttered.
James' grin only widened, if possible. "Aww, you wound me, Albus," he clutched a hand to his heart dramatically. "Well just remember that if I am a dung beetle, at least I'd be worshipped by the Egyptians, while you can't even get your owl to do the same." He gave a cheeky wink.
"Hey, Apollo loves me, okay?" Albus stretched out a finger to his owl, currently perched atop its cage. Apollo promptly bit him.
"Ow!" He drew his hand back with a hiss. He glared at his owl, who only stared reproachfully back, eyes glinting with something akin to mischief, as if it too enjoyed teasing Albus.
James sniggered. "I feel the love."
"You're so annoying," Albus started towards James, who darted backwards with a yelp. Throwing both hands up into the air, he made a huge show of getting away from Albus, who chased him around, brandishing his wand like a whip - and a rather short one at that.
A few minutes later, all you could hear were James' shouts of "Stop waving your wand like that, you'll take someone's eye out!" and "It's not my fault your owl betrayed you! You should be ashamed of yourself for not teaching him the concept of loyalty!" Laughter echoed around the room as the surrounding students stopped to watch the display.
"Looks like they're having a good time."
I jumped as a deep voice spoke close to my ear, heat rising in my face. Scorpius tilted his head at me with an amused smile on his face. "You okay there?"
I glared at him. He totally knew. "You have to stop scaring me like that! You'll give me a heart attack before school's even started."
He shrugged. "It's funny seeing you get all worked up. Your face becomes as red as your hair and you get all angry like a tiger ready to pounce."
If anything, I felt my face burning even more. Although I wasn't ready to admit it, my stomach was fluttering with butterflies. I turned my back on him and began to walk away, hiding my face behind my hair in an attempt to savour the last of the dignity left in me. A warm hand stopped me in my tracks as it enclosed around my wrist.
"Wait, Lily."
I heard the shift of tone in his voice, and turned back to face him, only to find him scratching his neck awkwardly and staring at the ground, so different from the confident boy he was a few moments before. He brought his eyes up to meet mine. "We are friends, right?"
I stared back at him. "Yeah... I guess."
"Are you sure?" He glanced at me uncertainly.
I nodded, hesitant of where he was going with this.
The bold smirk returned. "Good. That means I don't have to stop annoying you."
I blinked. "How does that relate?"
Scorpius shook his head at me. "You don't annoy people who aren't your friends, because that would be considered rude. My friends, on the other hand, I can annoy them as much as I want. Manners, Lily." He tutted, spreading his hands.
I couldn't help the small smile that spread across my face, to which Scorpius beamed in response, pleased at my reaction.
"Well Lily, you should go to bed soon. Gotta catch that beauty sleep - you'll need it." He ducked out of the way of my hand as I attempted to slap him, laughing, and sauntered away.
Later that night, I lay in my bed staring at the ceiling, feeling restless. Over and over, I replayed the scene downstairs in my head - mentally berating myself for allowing my cheeks to get red so easily - until my eyelids started to droop. When I finally began to drift away, I fell asleep to the image of a certain third year boy with stormy grey eyes and hair like rays of winter sunlight. With a smile on my face.
