My heart caught in my throat. Tensing my shoulders, I simply stared at him. Beside me, Hugo eyed him suspiciously. Scorpius gave a small smile and leaned towards me. He was so close I could feel his hot breath against my ear, sending shivers down my spine.
I think I've forgotten how to breathe. Oh, that tickles.
"There's a Gryffindor party in the common room later. Go upstairs, unpack and come back down." He straightened up and turned to leave. "See you, Lily. Bye Hugo!"
The air felt cold after he had left. A chuckle sounded behind me, and I turned to look at Hugo. A cheeky grin was spreading across his face as he burst out laughing
"What is it?" I demanded suspiciously.
"Did you know your face turned the most brilliant shade of red?" Hugo replied, a sly look creeping onto his face,. "Like a tomato. Amazing, actually. I didn't know that was humanly possible, I mean, at least not for a little toddler like you."
"I am not a toddler!" I shot back. "And, I'm pretty sure my face wasn't that red."
"It was as red as your hair, and that's saying something."
"It was not. You're exaggerating." I snapped irritatedly.
"Whatever you say, Lily. Now come on, we've gotta catch up with the rest of the first years!" Albus exclaimed, rolling his eyes. He tugged my arm and pulled me along, ignoring my protests that first of all, I wasn't staring, and secondly, I wanted him to stop dragging me along against my will.
Up and up we went, through dozens of marble staircases, which moved and changed, creating the illusion of an endless maze. Famous portraits whispered and pointed at the crowd of first years that shuffled past. I couldn't help noticing that many hanging portraits were staring openly at Hugo and I; some of them looked at us with awe, and others had a sort of proud affection in their gaze, while a rare few stared with morbid curiosity as though we were some sort of abomination. They nudged each other and spoke excitedly, yet when I tried to stop and greet them, I was swept away amongst the sea of first years.
"Good luck, Lily!" A voice called out from behind me. I spun around to see a portrait beaming at me, waving. My heart swelled at the welcoming gesture as I smiled shyly back, then turned and rushed after the crowd of first years.
Still we climbed, and I felt my eyelids starting to droop - probably the effect of all that scrumptious food at the feast. Just when I felt like this arduous journey would never end, we rounded a corner, which led to what seemed like a rather long and daunting corridor.
At the end was a portrait of the infamous fat lady, framed most graciously in a pink silk dress, delicate beads of silver pearls painted with spherical precision around her neck. Dimly, I registered our prefect giving her the password, and then the portrait swung open, revealing a hole in the wall. One by one,we clambered through, our stream of incessant chatter dying down as our eyes peered straight into a large, round room.
The entire room was a deep, rich red. The walls were made of a strong brick individually carved with intricate swirling patterns of gold that gleamed with an almost ethereal sense of magic in the light. Soft, cosy armchairs were displayed neatly around the room, adding to the atmosphere of warmth and contentment. At the edge of the room was a large fireplace, complete with a flickering red flame that appeared to be dancing with its shadowy partners to their own rhythm of life; leaving patterns of glowing embers in their wake. Some students were seated at desks, completely absorbed in games of wizard's chess, above which huge portraits were animatedly cheering each player on and shouting out orders of their own that confused the chess pieces to no end.
One by one, the first years began to mingle about the other students, some deciding to stay in the common room and strike up conversations with the older years, while others (including Lily) beginning to stumble up the steps of the spiral staircase towards the dormitories, dragging feet that felt like sandbags.
Clumsily, in an almost dreamlike state, I trudged towards the direction of my four-poster bed, briefly registering the presence of my suitcase as I lay sprawled in a heap on the soft layers of my newly made bed. My hands smoothed over the creases of the sheet wrapping around me, comforting myself in its imperfections as I laid there unmoving like a cocoon. My mind seemed troubled by something. There was something I was forgetting, but I couldn't quite get a grasp of what exactly. Drained of energy, my thoughts wandered aimlessly as I began to drift off, welcoming the soothing blackness of sleep...
Wait, the party! My mind panicked for a split second as I tried to leap up, but my energy was wearing thin, and my limbs gave way as my body sank back onto the comfort of the soft fluffy pillow on my bed. Fighting the temptation of sleep that threatened to engulf me, I made one last futile effort to get on my feet, but to no avail. The physical strain of today had been too much. I gave up, exhausted in my efforts to fight the chaos of my mind, and succumbed to the deep sleep that began to overwhelm me.
