Chapter 2: The Project

*Rose's POV*

"Oh my gosh, I already learned this stuff. So boring." I thought to myself as Mr. Cahill droned on.

I proceeded to draw in my notebook. I was never much for drawing, but what else am I supposed to do during class? I looked over at Marcel. He was concentrating hard on the lesson, his gorgeous eyes focused on the SMARTboard. Marcel with his slicked back brown hair was sitting there, so perfectly, and I couldn't help but want him.

My number two graphite pencil wandered over the page, and I started to sketch Marcel. I made sure to capture every one of his features and I tried to do him justice, but that failed. I crumpled up the page. I'd just throw it out at the end of class.

For all of the attention he was getting from me, Marcel didn't seem to notice me watching him at all. He was so oblivious. He never got the subtle hints I dropped from time to time. I'd liked him for FOREVER. (At least since the 7th grade)

Marcel was the only guy who understood me. We were both kind of outcasts in middle school, but to tell the truth, I always kind of felt as if I needed to take care of him. Over the years, I became less awkward and made some more friends, but Marcel always clung to me. (Not that I mind) My friends are cordial when I'm with him, but I make sure to separate girl time and Marcel time. Marcel never made fun of my doodles, or my clothes. He just was always there for me, like a security blanket.

While I was lost in thought, the bell had already rang, and most students had already cleared out of the classroom. Marcel hesitantly tapped me.

"Rose? It's time to go. We have to get to English on time, and I was hoping you'd walk with me there." He smiled a toothy grin that made my insides melt, just like it always did.

"Yeah. Yeah, sorry. I just kinda zoned out. Thanks for waiting for me." I responded as I scrambled my stuff together and shoved it into my Vera Bradley school bag. I saw my drawing on the floor, and I hurriedly picked it up, ripped it up and threw it in the wastebasket. I was blushing from embarrassment as I looked back up at Marcel. He shot me a quizzical look, but quickly dismissed it and replaced it with a smile.

*Marcel's POV*

As Rose and I walked into Mrs. Griffin's english class, we parted ways. Mrs. Griffin was super strict and gave us assigned seats, and Rose was all the way in the front, and i was closer to the back, her last name being Beck and mine Styles.

"All right class, let's get started." Mrs. Griffin's voice carried throughout the room. "I'm going to be away for the rest of the week, due to a teacher's workshop the Board of Ed has scheduled. You will have a substitute for the rest of the week."

With that, most of the class sat up straighter. They loved substitutes. They always took advantage of their uncertainty, which meant no work got done. I hated when this happens. This meant that Rose and I were practically the only ones who stuck to Mrs. Griffin's sub plans.

Mrs. Griffin continued, "Now, I expect you to give your full attention to the sub, and treat him or her just like you would myself. The substitute will report all bad behavior to me. While I am away, you will have a project to be completed with a partner, and the lessons this week will help you. This project will be half of your grade this semester. If you fail to complete the assignment, your grade will plummet."

The kids who were celebrating just moments before, were now groaning. They were Grade-A slackers. Thank goodness I would have to work with any of them. Rose and I would obviously work together.

"Class, I will now announce your partners.' stated Mrs. Griffin.

This brought the whole class into a tizzy. I looked at Rose, who looked disappointed. We always worked together. We both split the work evenly.

I just hoped that she would put us together. She began to read off a list. I wasn't really listening until I heard,

"Marcel is partnered with Jacob and Rose is partnered with Miles."

I never really noticed Jacob. He was pretty popular, but he had never made fun of me, so I figured it would be okay. I would just get the work done fast and we'd be done. My straight A's would stay perfectly intact.

It was Rose I was worried about. Miles was a catch. A lot of girls had a crush on him.

"What if Rose startes to like him and leaves me behind? Just forgets me?" I worried in my head.

While Mrs. Griffin listed the details of the project, I took a glance at Miles and, just as I expected, he was looking over at Rose smiling, probably plotting ways to make his move on my best friend.

So... Miles and Rose? Do you think there will be some chemistry? What about Marcel? Think he has any chance with Ryleigh?
