Chapter 3: It's Just a Crush, Right?

*Rose's POV*

As I shoved open the door to the side exit of the high school, rain started to fall. It was just a drizzle, so I decided to just keep walking. Rain didn't ever seem to bother me. Small puddles would soon collect, dousing my converse.

I readjusted my backpack on my shoulders and crossed the parking lot. When I got to the sidewalk, my phone started playing Little Bird by Ed Sheeran, meaning I had just got a text.

And if I kissed you

Will your mouth read this truth

Darling, how I miss you

Strawberries taste how lips do

That was my favorite part of the song. I was pretty much the only Sheerio in my group of friends, but that meant I got Ed all to myself.

I pulled out my phone and checked the screen.

Hi, I was wondering if today you wanted to come over in a little bit and do some homework?

It was Marcel. I hate telling people no, but I had to. At 4 o'clock, Ellie and Fiona were coming over to "do homework"- which really means that we are going to be gossiping the whole time.

Sorry, I can't, the girls are coming over today. But definitely another time! xx

I felt guilty as I pressed send. There was almost immediately a response

Oh, ok. :(

Oh God, he had to go and make me feel like the worst person. I really wish I could've gone, but I couldn't have just canceled on El and Fiona.

The rejected invite kind of dampened my mood, and the weather seemed to duplicate my emotions because just then, the rain started hurtling down at top speed.

Great.

As I started to run, a red Jeep pulled up next to me, and seemed to be following me. I peered into the window to see.... Miles?

"Rose! What are you doing out in this rain?" He asked. We had gotten to know each other after English today, when he walked me back to my locker.

"I'm looking for my TARDIS." I replied sarcastically, as he parked on the side of the road.

He smiled. I looked down at my sneakers. I don't know what it was about Miles, but his smile just made my insides, well, melt a little. I looked back up and gave him a real answer.

"Walking home, you big idiot, while you are in your cushy car. I've been begging my mum for weeks to even consider getting me one for my birthday!"

It's true. I'll be 17 in October, and the only thing I really want is a car. Any type, just one that runs.

"Now, are you going to save me from the rain or just leave me here, getting soaked as I speak?" I continued.

Miles grabbed an umbrella and got out of his car. He locked it.

Why is he getting out? Is he going to give it to me? Walk with me? I barely know him!

"Lead the way." he said and shot me that gleaming smile of his. He was going to walk with me! There was just something so captivating about him, so intriguing that I couldn't say no.

"Well, considering I've only just formally met you today, I think we should get to know each other." I stated, looking at Miles.

He was really cute. All the girls know it. But he never seemed to be interested in a relationship. He was a transfer, he had moved here freshman year. His smooth hair and chocolatey brown eyes captured the hearts of many of my fellow classmates. Girls flirted relentlessly with him, and he was always polite but didn't seem to flirt back. So why did it seem as if he was flirting with me?

"Sure, let's play the question game," I replied.

He pondered, searching for a question, and then spoke.

"Favorite number?"

"Mine is 16. What's yours?"

"9. Now it's your turn to ask a question."

For a moment there, I just stared at Miles, with his deep, richly colored eyes.

Wait, you like Marcel, don't you? But, Miles is cute, and I'm not dating Marcel, so it's not going to do any harm if I have a teensy crush on both of them. Right?

I must have zoned out for a while, because the next thing I knew, Miles was waving his hand in front of my face.

"Rose? Earth to Roseee?"

"What?" I responded, dazed. "Oh, sorry, just lost in thought. Oh um, we have to cross the road here." I directed. Even though we had passed my house a bit ago, I wanted to talk more with Miles, so I led him around the surrounding neighborhoods.

"Okay. So, do you have a question?" Miles asked.

" Yes. Um.. Favorite animal?"

"Easy. A snake."

"What is wrong with you? Weirdo." I scoffed, "Mine would have to be a giraffe. They're so tall, like I wish I was."

I was petite, only 5 feet, so Miles was definitley taller than me.

We continued with our silly little question game until I finally reached my house.

"Well, we're here. Casa de la Rose." I sighed, wishing I didn't have to go. The girls would be arriving any minute, and if they saw Miles, I would end up super embarrassed.

"It's a beautiful house for a beautiful girl." Miles said, blushing.

Okay, hold up. What? He called me beautiful, and was blushing. Who calls a house beautiful anyways but who cares? I'm beautiful. Oh gosh, say something cute back, Rose, think!

"You're not too bad yourself." I replied.

Smooth, smooth.

"Will I get to hang out with you again? I had the best time walking with you today." Miles said.

"Of course. And don't forget we have that project!" I reminded him.

He smiled and pulled me into a hug. He was warm, and smelled like fabric softener. His arms wrapped around me felt so good, so right. I never wanted to pull away, but I did when I got a glance at my mom watching us from inside.

"I'm going to miss you." Miles whined like a little boy once we were face to face.

"We have school tomorrow! We'll see each other again. Try not to think about me too much!" I remarked.

"You can never think too much."

And with a wink, he was off, leaving me breathless.

"Who was that boy? I've never seen him before." questioned my Mum, Andrea.

"Mum!" I exclaimed.

She smiled.

"Okay, his name is Miles, and he's in my English class. He's really nice and we are doing a project together."

"He seems kind, and plus he's easy on the eyes."

I rolled my eyes, smiled, and headed off to my room.

"Don't let Dad hear that!" I called.

I shut my door and flopped onto my bed.

He's going to miss me. He got out of his car and now has to walk back to go get it. For me. This is so new.

I'd never flirted before, and certainly have not been flirted with. This was so new, and exciting, and I was loving it.

Ed Sheeran started singing again and I checked my phone. A text from Marcel. It was a picture of Miles and I laughing on the sidewalk outside his house. His text read:

Hanging out with the girls, huh?
