The best part of Wednesdays was knowing that I could go to the Advanced Scholars Club.

The club was held in one big room in the Languages building. There was a big white board facing the students, and the door. Posters dotted the walls. There were a lot of chairs, since it was just a regular classroom, but not all of the chairs were going to be filled. That was because Advanced Scholars didn't have a lot of people.

For obvious reasons.

Candice, Shay and I were excused from our fourth period classes. We had to prepare the class a bit, but we really didn't do anything. Shay wrote "Welcome," on the board, and I made sure I had my flashcards, and Candice touched up her lip gloss. And that was that. We were done.

We took up our roles with pride. I was club President; Candice, club Secretary of the Treasury; Sharon, club Historian. No juniors were more willing to be apart of the club than the three of us. It was probably a nerd thing, but who cared? As long as we had fun, which we undeniably did.

The bell rang for lunch and we chilled in room 108, waiting for the club members. The first members showed up minutes later, said hi to us. I gave them a greeting and told them to sign in. They greeted me warmly.

"Hey, Temara."

"Temara, what's up?"

"Hi, everybody. Good to see you. "

I introduced myself to kids I didn't know, chatted with the old members, and found myself counting the list of kids who signed in. There were at least twenty kids on the sheet. A positive.

I met everyone there, but I scanned and scanned the paper and I felt like someone was missing. Oh.

Blaze. Where was he?

Before I was excused from my fourth period, I told Blaze that Advanced Scholars was meeting today. He smiled as I left and told me he'd be there.

I waited for him to walk through the doors as everyone settled. It kind of got quiet, and Candice nudged me.

"Huh?"

"Are you gonna do the intro thingy?"

She gestured to the class, and some people were looking at us. Expectant.

"Yeah," I shook my head, and then looked at her. "Sorry, I was waiting for someone."

Taking one last glance at the door, I went up to the front of the room. I called everybody to attention. Most people looked up at me and, satisfied with their attention, I started going on about Advanced Scholars.

Advanced Scholars was created since the beginning of the school. It wasn't popular then, but gained attention when a valedictorian spoke about it in the school's newspaper, The Knight. People started paying more attention to the club after that. At first it was just a place where kids met up to play board games, or catch up on homework. But time passed and club members started to believe that it was more a place of academic excellence. If a valedictorian could come out of the club, then clearly it was meant to be a great program. Standards changed, clear-cut expectations were put up. Slowly but surely, ASC became a place for smart kids.

"And not to stroke anybody's ego, but getting into Advanced Scholars is a privilege. So welcome, you guys. You guys made it."

The members clapped. I finished up my last words with a smile and let the members eat and talk amongst themselves. I put my flashcards away. I tucked them in my backpack. I glanced furtively at the door.

"You hardly needed your flashcards," Shay commented, bringing my attention to her.

"I know! Thank God for memory."
