18: Bae and A Group of Somebodies

Tall, lanky boy with full lips and a bored expression. Short, slim girl with a bright smile and giddy aura. Two different people. Two different personalities. Two different bodies unperturbed by the surroundings of a cafeteria full of eating students.

They were sitting across from each other, talking.

I watched Can and Beast flirt across the cafeteria. Or at least that's what I think they were doing. While I was sure Candice was being flirty, I couldn't tell whether or not the guy returned her enthusiasm. He just looked too blasé. Uncaring.

"Does your brother always look so uninterested?" I worried, grabbing apple juice and watching the couple.

Blaze yawned. "Sort of. Why?"

I tipped my chin at Candice and Beast. "Well, he's certainly not bothering to change his expression for Can's sake. Look at him. Is he even, like, awake?"

Sharon, sitting next to me, nodded. Her usual ponytail moved forward and back as she bobbed her head in agreement. "He's definitely sleepy-looking," she said. "It's a bit off-putting."

Blaze glanced around and looked at his twin and Candice. He observed for a second, then shrugged. "That's typical Beast. I wouldn't worry about it."

I nodded and drank my juice pensively. I just hoped Candice was doing okay. I had hooked her up, after all; it'd sucked to think something went wrong.

I shook the idea and tried to engage with my table.

Sitting next to Shay across from Blaze was such a normal thing now and still, I had to admit that it was interesting to see. I listened to my best friend and him talk as if they hadn't belonged to two totally different social groups. It was cool.

I knew I missed a social cue, because Blaze and Shay suddenly looked at me, expectant.

"What?" I asked, dumbfounded.

"I said, I have a soccer game tonight," Blaze told me patiently. "So far, Shay's agreed to go. I just wanted to know if you wanted to come along?"

"Crap, I'd love to," I said, taken aback by the news. I didn't know there was a game today. "What time does it start?"

"Six. Ends at eight," he said.

Late game, I thought, dismayed. I had a ton of homework tonight; my teachers seemed to want to bury me in work, today in particular. How could I attend the game and do homework? I had too much work to do.

But at the same time, Blaze was playing tonight. I genuinely wanted to go, to watch and enjoy. I lifted my head up, weighing options. Blaze met my gaze. When he smiled, I knew I had no chance.

Aw, man.

He was just too irresistible.

"I'll be there," I finally decided, sighing.

"It'll be cool, Temara," Sharon spoke up brightly. "Heard we're up against South."

"Really?"

"Yeah!"

South High School was our school's greatest enemy. This was going to be darn exciting. We'd had beef with the crimson Dames for a long time.

"Sounds good," I told her, feeling the excitement.

The bell rang for fifth period and my table and I dumped our lunches into the trash. Blaze walked me to class and, like usual, talked to me before leaving for his fifth class. I could see his excitement when he talked about the game. Fiery determination shone in his eyes. I adored the competitive dork.

When I got home I figured I had some hours to waste before heading back. Those hours were spent working on the mass of homework.

When five thirty rolled around, I got up, feeling excited. I wasn't quite done with the homework, but I was too hype about the game to worry about it. I slid on my NHS hoodie and threw on a matching scarf.

It was game time.

I checked my phone when it buzzed, styling my hair into a ponytail before picking it up. We're around the corner, said an enthusiastic text from Candice herself. Shay and I should be there in five!

There was a good mass of people in the stands by the time me, Candice, and Sharon arrived. We were given wrist bands when we entered and were encouraged to find a spot before all the seats were taken. That was good advice. We tried looking for one, knowing that tonight was busy with people.

If the audience was busy, then the field was even busier. It was full of stretching players, referees, and coaches. One man wearing an NHS tee sprayed white lines on the grass. Score-keepers sat with their backs to us on the side of the field. Everyone's movements were stark and easily seen, for big bright lights around the field illuminated them even though the setting sun still provided a warm glow.

"Look! There," said Candice suddenly, bringing my attention from the field and Sharon's from a plate of cheesy nachos. "There's a spot," she specified shortly, gesturing. "Let's sit there."

Candice was referring to the seats near Beast, where he was sitting among a group of friends. It wasn't a bad spot. Big enough for the three of us for sure. The only problem was Beast's friends, however. I recognized them -- they were jocks, populars.

"You wanna sit with them, Candice?" I asked dubiously, not sure if they'd like us being there.

"Don't worry, Mara," Candice said. She must've understood my caution. "Beast said his friends are cool. And there's probably no other decent seats around, so let's give it a try."

"Okay," I said. But not before Shay and I exchanged glances before following. If Candice was confident about going over there, then so were we.

Happy Friday! How are you all? <3 Hope you enjoyed reading this chapter.

A few things, guys:

1. My birthday was yesterday! Turn up!!! Or turn down, since it was yesterday, aha. Whatever, it's lit. *dances in the name of maturity*

2. 10K reads! Yay!

3. The sequel to I Didn't Expect This is up. The book is called I Didn't Foresee This -- pretty creative, I know. But like the first story, it's mature. Curse words, sex scenes, and other adult content is there, ready to be read. Ready to sell you a story about unapologetic lust, sensual sex, woeful regret, and fickle love. It's even blunter than the first one, I promise. Check it out, please? Preface is up. Chapter 1 will be published tonight. Thanks in advance.
