Afterword

Now that I've experienced it, I think I can say that popularity's not all that I had originally made it out to be.

There are a couple of reasons why I know this is true, and I know because Candice and Sharon have agreed with me:

1. Popularity is not about being wealthy or attractive or even overly sporty, at least not the way people paint it to be. More often than not, people are popular simply for being popular -- and it just happens to be that popular people are much involved in the extracurricular activities that we associate them with. These guys, the cool-looking jocks and the insanely-gorgeous cheerleaders, are regular people with regular characteristics. People popularize certain people, and that's why they're relevant. It doesn't matter who they choose, because a popular kid could easily be me, a lowly nerd, or Melanie, a drop-dead gorgeous cheerleader.

2. It's not particularly fabulous, to be known by people. I mean, it's fun being the kid that people want to hang out with. Because of Blaze, I've gotten a huge amount of party invitations, and I've gained a lot of friends through social media, and I even suppose I've made a few meaningful connections, but it doesn't make much a difference to my quality of life. I'm just as content to hang out with Candice and Sharon as with any of Blaze's group of friends, if not more.

After I graduated, real life lessons like these stuck with me. I didn't take life too seriously since my senior year at North High. I began to appreciate why things were the way they were, because really, noone is unlike anyone else. I used to think life was a place where people were distinct from each other, that there were the nerds, and that there were the jocks. But then I met many Ms. Sanders in college, a handful of Vanessas, and a load of Blazes. I even met some Temaras. And I can honestly conclude that nerds and jocks are essentially the same people.

So when the time comes, when they'll go to high school and be exposed to trival high school problems, I'll tell me and Blaze's kids that, too.
