Grassy Tussle

By mid-morning, they found themselves at the Sea of Grass. It was true, the hills and grass looked like sea billows rolling about on a breezy day.

The tall grass made crossing the land slower, and occasionally they'd startle birds that would then flutter into the air with angry squawks.

Sonic wanted so bad to dash ahead, but in the tall grass and hills, he might lose track of the rest of them.
He wandered in the back of the group, hands in the pockets of the trousers he was forced to wear.

He wondered how their mother had crossed the landscape. He hadn't seen her since she'd left the camp the afternoon before, and with every hill they crossed, he hoped to see her in the distance so they could catch up.

However, his thoughts were not enough to keep him from hearing voices in the grass. "Guys? We've got company!" He ducked as a blast whizzed by his ear.

"Finally! A fight!" Shadow hissed, then Sonic watched him grow upwards. Silver morphed into diamond form, shimmering in the daylight, and they all got into fighting positions.

My special power would be handy right now...! He dodged another fire, dashing to the side. He remembered they had weapons designed to counteract his speed, but that was all he knew how to use! What good would it do him!?

He yelped as another shot locked around his legs like a pair of cuffs, and he fell onto the ground. "Ah!"

"Sonic!" Amy shouted, slamming her hammer into a soldier.

Everyone cover your ears! Venice transmitted to their minds. I've got a plan!

They all covered their ears, except for the soldiers, whose helmets blocked telepathic signals. Venice took in a deep breath, then screamed. A Sonic Scream.

The sound rattled Sonic's head even with his ears plugged, and it rattled the soldiers' even more. As he broke off, Sonic felt the ground begin to rumble under him, like something was coming at them.

"Icoria Stampede!" A soldier screamed.

Sonic was suddenly jerked up by Shadow's hand as hundreds of massive bison-like creatures dashed by his brother's feet.
"Whoa...!" He struggled to free his ankles of the energy cuffs, seeing Silver, Rouge, Amanda and Tails had pulled the rest of them out of harm's way. "Nice scream, Ven."

Venice shrugged modestly as Amanda held him up. "It was nothing..."

Sonic crossed his arms. "I just wish I knew what my power is..."

"I saw it." Rouge explained. "Just for a split second when you fell, then you stopped."

"What? What was I doing!?"

Rouge waved her hands in front of her face. "Poof! Now you see him, now you don't."

Sonic looked at his hands, then clenched his fists, grinning as he faded away. He could still see a ghostly form of himself. "Huh! They can't shoot what they can't see!"

"So, we've got Diamond mimicry, size-shifting, invisibility and a sonic scream."

"Four powers they don't expect...that we can use to our advantage." Shadow dropped Sonic to the ground as he shrunk back down to normal size. "Let's keep moving."

"Aye aye!" Tails announced.

"You lost them...!?" The commander shook the soldier. "You know her Ladyship will have our heads!"

"W-We were stampeded by a herd of Icoria! A-At least we still have that blockade outside the walls, sir!"

"That's not good enough! Those kids are only days away from safety within those walls!" He dropped the soldier. "I don't care how you do it, just get rid of them!"

"Y-Yes, sir!"

The soldier ran away, leaving the commander alone in his tent. "We almost got the misfit, but even he escaped." He pulled out a large case, opening it and examining the weapon inside. "If you want something done right..."
