Chapter 2

When Nicky returned to the counter of the café, a couple of her orders were ready to be delivered. One of them was that of her blind customer. She suddenly felt exited by the prospect of talking to him. She intended to introduce herself and that prospect made her heart beat just a little faster.

“Calm yourself girl, he is just a customer. You always introduce yourself to your customers. It makes them feel friendlier towards you and that just makes your job easier.” She told herself as she approached his table with his order in her tray.

“Hello sir, your order is here. Your coffee and your chocolate cake. I hope you will like it. My name is Nicky. Call me if you need something else.” She told him cheerfully

He turned her way, gave her a heart stopping smile and told her:

“Hello Nicky, thanks you for bringing me my order and especially for sitting me so quickly on this table. My name is Mike by the way” her heart fluttered at the sound of his voice

“You are welcome. It is my job to keep all of you as happy as it gets” she said blushing, grateful that he could not see her predicament. She was so happy that he gave her his name. It suited him just perfect, but that was no reason for her giddiness. She was really puzzled by her reaction to him now. She tried to tell herself that it was only out of curiosity, but that excuse was not very justifiable. She quickly took the tray and moved to the other tables before she said something else and embarrassed herself.

Nicky kept working, serving the customers. From time to time she kept observing Mike. He was making all kind of faces. Sometimes laughing sometimes frowning and sometimes he just seemed thoughtful. Nicky wondered if he was just contemplating some things that had already happened. His dealings maybe, with some friend or family member. She was certain that he had many people in his life. They just did not come here with him. He was so sweet with her when she brought his order to him that there was no way he did not have friends. She had gone to him one more time to ask him if he wanted something else and he had asked a refill on his coffee. He was polite to her, without hinting that he wanted any further conversation with her. She was a little disappointed, although she knew that her job was not to sit and talk to him but to bring him his order.

A few hours later her shift was about to end. She was tired because the place was packed most of the time. That was not bad though since that meant more tips for her. All in all she was satisfied by her day. She and the girls communicated perfectly and the customers were content with the service. That meant that her new boss that was coming from time to time to check on her, would be satisfied with her. That was crucial for her. She could not afford to be jobless. Mike was still there. Silent, drinking his coffee slowly. She went next to him.

“Mike?”

“Yes Nicky? Is there something you need?”

“Well my shift is on its end and I was wondering if you could pay me so that I can close my tab at the cashier. Of course that does not mean that you have to go or that you can’t order something else afterwards.”

“No, don’t worry. I was about to leave anyway. I stayed too much today.”

“You can stay as long as you want. I loved serving on you.” Nicky said too emotional and stopped right away realizing that she had gone too far.

He obviously sensed her uneasiness and smiled at her. “It is nice to be wanted. Thanks you Nicky. Could you please read me the sum of the bill?”

Nicky felt uncomfortable not only because of what she had said, but of how stupid it was of her that she had not read him the receipt. He was blind for god’s sake, was he supposed to guess the sum.

“Sorry” she mumbled “I should have been more thoughtful. It is 14,20.”

Mike took a twenty from his wallet and gave it to her. “The change is for you”

“No no it is too much. Please let me give you your change.”

“I want you to keep them” he said and got up starting to put his raincoat on

“Do you want any help with that?” Nicky offered.

“I am OK thanks you. I can do most things by myself”

“I am sorry I did not mean to offend you” Nicky blushed

“I know princess. Don’t you worry about it. Have a nice rest.”

“Thanks you good day” She said and left.

She went to the counter and gave the money of her orders. Then she went back to the staff room and quickly changed on her own clothes. Before she knew it she had said goodbye to her boss and she was out of the door looking right and left. She saw Mike a down the street pacing carefully and she followed him on close range. She was not a stalker. She had never done such a thing before. She was too curious to see where he lived and it was not as if she had to go home at a certain hour. She lived alone and practically had no friends to socialize with. It was not that she was antisocial. She just never had time to have friends before. When she was in school, she went straight from school to work and then to home to study and help her grandmother. She had no time to do all the things her classmates did, like going shopping or going to the cinema. She did not even have a cell phone to communicate like all of them did with a passion. So a year after her parents died even the few friends she had before had drifted away.

She was not feeling lonely at the time though, because she had her grandmother to talk too. But after her nana, as she used to call her, passed away she had no one. She tried to make friends with some of the other waitresses that she worked with but they all were married with children and did not have time for a young girl in need of some social life. Of course the fact that her financial situation was still on perilous grounds, did not give her the chance to buy more stylish clothes, and that explained why not even the other people of her age at the block of apartments she lived in, ever tried to befriend her. She that was very superficial of them but the result was that she remained alone.

Each day she left from work late, since she always stayed more hours than her normal shift, sometimes dropping to the grocery store before going home. She cooked her dinner and ate in front of her tv. The only luxury she allowed herself was the annual fee she paid in a local library to borrow some books to read. So after she ate and washed the dishes she sat on her sofa and read her books trying to live through the characters of each and every one. She was not particular on the kind of the book. She read history novels, adventures, romance novels, biographies and whatever sounded intriguing. She was not unhappy of her life. It was just that sometimes she missed having someone to ask her how work was when she got home or to discuss the news they saw on the tv or even to comment on her books.

So here she was now stalking one of her customers. Way to go Nicky. But no matter her thoughts she kept following him. After ten minutes or so, he reached a beautiful one story house with a black picket fence outside and a small garden on the front. He went straight to the door and started unlocking when a beautiful young woman came behind him and hugged him. She was on the ground before, obviously tending on the garden and that is why Nicky hadn’t seen her to begin with.

Nicky felt a wave of disappointment wash over her. She should be glad that he had someone that obviously cared for him but she just could not suppress the jealousy she felt when she saw that woman hug him so affectionately. She was about to turn around and leave when the woman turned at looked right at her. Nicky almost panicked and left quickly back the way she had gone there. She was insane for following him.

She practically run to the bus station and an hour later she was home cooking dinner.

“Back to my routine” she thought
