Chapter 10

Nicky reached her place, her mind in a total jumble. She went straight to her tiny couch, her favorite spot in her home and sat on it, thinking of all the things she had experienced that day. She couldn’t understand why he had insisted that she joined him next Thursday to meet his family. For starters she thought that it was probably sorry for her after she spilled to him her life long story. She really didn’t want his pity. But then she remembered that it was not pity mirrored in his face when he invited her. It was pure anger. He was furious at something, but she couldn’t understand what that was. Sure people did not always treat her fair, especially people her age, but that was the way of life. Life was not easy and it sure was not fair. He of all people should know about it. Losing his eyesight was a much worse thing than being poor and friendless. She at least could at some point make friends and be in a less difficult financial situation. He on the other hand had to live all his life in total darkens. There were so many things that she took for granted and he could never experience. Those thoughts made her sad and she reprimanded herself. Like she didn’t like people feeling sorry for her, he surly was even more sensitive in that matter. He had actually growled to her like a grizzly with a sore paw when she had asked him if his sister in law went everyday to help him at home. He clearly did not like people thinking him as helpless and he had proved to her that he could manage things at his home pretty good on his own.

Back to the original question though, why had he insisted that she went to meet his brother’s family. She was barely a stranger to him and he was ready to introduce her to his family. They weren’t friends yet and they surely weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend. That idea alone was absurd. After all he was a famous world known writer and she was nothing but a young waitress that stalked him to his house. Resuming her actions towards him she was sure that there was no way he could ever think of her that way. She wondered why the thought had even passed from her mind. It was ludicrous. But then she remembered how close to her he had come while they were cooking together and how that closeness had made her fell. She recalled how his breathe on her neck had made her shiver with a strange delight she had never felt before. Could it be possible that he was flirting with her or had he come that close to her just trying to cook. She had never cooked with someone else before, let alone a blind man that had to feel most things since he couldn’t see them. That was probably the reason for his closeness.

Thinking of his closeness to her made her feel the blood in her veins boil once more. She really didn’t know how to deal with those emotions. They were new to her and she was certain she shouldn’t be feeling them. Next thing she knew she would be falling in love with him and that would be a total disaster. She was not worthy of being with a guy like him and he would never feel the same for her. This was a heartbreak waiting to happen and she had to protect herself from it. That was the moment that she decided that she would cancel on him the next morning. With the decision taken she took a shower to relax her hormones and went straight to bed. She prayed for a dreamless restful sleep.

She was in her apartment reading a novel and was too engrossed in the plot that she jumped out of her skin when her doorbell rang. That was weird because she never had any visitors. She went to the door and asked
