The boy

I woke up the next morning and sighed. It was Sunday and that meant tomorrow I'd have to face everyone again.
you can do this ash. It's not that bad.
I repeated this over and over in my head and heard a soft meow come from somewhere in my room.
"Here Felix" I snapped my fingers and the kitten jumped up to greet me.
I patted his little head and he snuggled into my neck, so soft and warm. I smiled to myself as I scratched his ears.
A while later I wandered downstairs to make myself some breakfast and checked my phone. A missed call from my mom? I dialled her number quickly.

"Hello?"
"Mom?? What's wrong did something happen?"
"Shh. Ash baby calm down. I just called to tell you I won't be home for a couple of days. John asked me to go on a trip with him"
"Oh.. I see. I'm sorry I just got worried after I had missed a call and you weren't home."
"I'm sorry Hun. I'll be back in a few days, be safe."
"I will mom. Love you."
"Love you too."
Click. The line went dead.
I frowned and decided to maybe take a walk, so I put on track pants and running shoes with my Tee shirt and locked the door behind me. I put my headphones in and started walking as I put music on.
I let my feet carry me, unsure of where to go and a little while later I had ended up at the library. I headed in but as I was walking down an aisle I bumped into someone.
"Watch it-"
"I'm so sorry!" I mumbled as I looked down "I didn't mean to bump into you" I could see a pair of beat up converse and some ripped skinny jeans. Oh crap, I bet it's another person from school and they're going to go around telling everyone how clumsy I am. I turned to walk away and felt a hand reach out and grab my arm. I flinched
"Hey... Whats the matter?"
I looked up wondering why this person was socializing with me, I'd never seen him before. Was he new to town?
"Nothing.."
"Doesn't seem like nothing. I'm Luke by the way, I'm new here."
"I'm Ash."
"Nice to meet you Ash. Now what's wrong? Why did you flinch away from me?"
"Everyone from in town here that knows of me hates me."
"Why?"
"I honestly don't even know" I looked down
"Well, I don't hate you. I'll be your friend." He smiled brightly and I smiled back.
"Really? You mean.. Like actually be my friend? This isn't just a bet you took is it?" He frowned.
"Do people really do that to you?"
"All the time.." He took my hand and took me over to a table so we could sit.
"Ash. I promise to you, I'm not like that. I will stick up for you. Do you go to River Valley High by any chance?"
I nodded and he grinned.
"Great! I start there tomorrow, where do you live?" I told him and he said we were neighbours. I do remember people moving in last week, but I didn't think anything of it at the time.
He smiled again and I smiled back.
"Thank you Luke"
