Beneath the Surface

Chapter 16

As soon as Adam jumps Carter runs towards the edge of the bridge and dives down to rescue Adam. He was so fast that I didn't even see him run pass me. The rain was coming down harder each second. I couldn't even register what was happening. Between the storm and Adam's jump off the bridge, I just couldn't believe what was happening at this very moment.

"Adam!" Liam yells from the bridge. His shoulder shaking up and down. His whole body shivering.

"Carter!" He yells. I walk quickly to where Liam is. His face mixed with tears and rain droplets dripping down the side of his cheeks.

"Carter! Adam!" Liam yells again.

I look down into the water to see if I can detect any movement, but I could barely see anything.

"Liam?" I say in my shaking voice.

Liam just looks down into the water not giving me any type of sign that he heard me.

"I'm calling the ambulance." I say and start dialing 911.

"This is 911. How may we help you?" A girl's voice answers.

"I'm here at the bridge. Yellowstone Bridge. There are two guys in the water down below and I can't see them. It's storming real badly over here." I say quickly and shaky. I hope the girl understood everything I was telling her. I didn't want to repeat myself.

"Help is on the way. Stay put." She says and hangs up the phone. I go back towards Liam.

"Help is on the way." I say to him.

"What if they're dead? What if they're both dead Hailey?" Liam says looking at me.

"They're not dead Liam. They're going to be alright." I say to him even though I don't believe what I'm saying.

"I should have stopped him. He's my brother Hailey. I can't lose him. Carter...Carter doesn't deserve what I put him through. I should have been the one to dive in. Not him."

"Stop it. Don't think like that. You need to stay positive. For Adam's and Carter's sake."

"They can't...they can't." Liam says and just breaks down as I hear the ambulance coming towards us with flashing red lights.

"Over here!" I yell as loud as I can.

In just seconds men come towards me as more men go under the bridge.

"Are you the one that called miss?" A man says to me.

"I am." I say back.

"What happened here?"

"My friend's brother jumped off the bridge and my friend's best friend went down to save him."

"Why would your friend's brother jump off a roof in a storm?"

"Because he wanted to die." I hear Liam say through his sobs.

The guy just looks at us both in horror and pity.

"You two need to get dried up. Come with me." The guy says and we go with him towards the ambulance truck until we hear a loud voice coming from below.

"We've found them!" I hear another man shout from below.

Liam's eyes and mine met with relief filled with worry.

"Go to the truck. I'm going to see what's happened." The man with us says and leaves us.

So Liam and I walk towards the ambulance and we get inside in the back.

"The younger one is unconscious but breathing and the other one is conscious." I hear the man from before say. Liam gets up as he see both of them get hauled into the truck. Adam in a gurney.
