Beneath the Surface

Chapter 22

"Gotcha! You're dead!" I say to Carter as soon as I get to his locker.

"What the...?" Carter says looking puzzled.

"You were my prey and I got you!" I teased and started laughing. Liam was laughing beside me too.

"What the hell man? You told her about our predator and prey game didn't you?" Carter asks Liam.

"Sure did." Liam said sounding proud.

"I thought it was cute!" I say to Carter and I pretty sure I saw him blush.

"Aww. You blushing Carter?" Liam teases.

"No!"

"Yes you are!"

"No I'm not!"

"What's going on here?" Natalie asks coming towards us with Ethan.

"Nothing." Carter, Liam, and I say in unison.

"Sure." Natalie says not buying it.

"I need to steal my lovely girl for a minute. You mind?" Natalie says to both Liam and Carter.

"Go ahead." Liam says smiling.

After we get away from the boys Natalie corners me at my locker.

"What's going on Nats?"

"What's going on? I've barely seen you these days."

"That's not true."

"Sure it is. Since when are you good buddies with Carter anyways?" Natalie asks with her arms crossed.

"He's not that bad." I tell her truthfully.

"Not that bad! He's a total jerk most of the time." She exclaims.

"True, but not always. By the way he's Liam's best friend and I'm his."

"I bet you want to be more than just friends." Natalie wiggles her eyebrows.

"What!? No! I j-just...never mind!"

"So defensive. Jeez Hales. I was just joking. Not really." She gives me her evil grin.

"Stop looking at me like that!"

"Ok I'll stop, but seriously I want to hang out sometime."

"Sure thing. What do you have in mind?"

"I want to go to a soccer game!"

"Ha ha very funny." I say rolling my eyes.

"I'm serious!"

"You sure? This is not just some scheme you're planning or something? You actually want to go to a soccer game?"

"I really do Hales. There's no scheme or anything. So will you?" She asks eagerly.

"Sure. Why not?" I say caving in.

"Yay!" She squeals and gives me a hug.

"Liam!" I yell from across the hall.

He looks over to me with one eyebrow raised and comes over to me along with Carter.

"What's up?" He asks me.

"We're going to your soccer game. The one Liam will be playing in."

"Really?" Liam says looking amused.

"Yep. Is that ok?"

"Of course it's ok!" Liam says excitedly.

"Great!" Natalie yells causing everyone to stare at us.
