5:00 PMDiego was playing Grand Theft Auto IV on his x-box when the phone rang.
He tried ignoring it to focus on his game, but what he considered an "infernal racket" didn't stop and didn't seem like it was going to stop anytime soon. So with an annoyed grunt, he paused his game, left his controller on the living room couch and went to answer the Damn landline. If it was his girlfriend, Violetta, who was calling, he wouldn't mind pausing his game. But Violetta never called him on the landline, so this definitely wasn't her.
"I swear to god if it's another one of those telemarketers ..." He mumbled as he reached the beeping machine.
Holding the speaker up, he said the standard hello and waited for an answer.
"Diego is that you ?" Asked the voice of a crying woman.
"Yes, Mrs. Castillo?" He was surprised to say the least. Why would Violetta's mom call him ? " Are you ok mam ?"
" Sweetie," she seemed to be trying to calm herself down, "I think you should sit down for this."
"Why?" His heart started thumping rapidly, " Is Vilu ok ? "
"Vilu's gone Diego !" The woman broke down into sobs. " She's gone ! My little baby's gone !!!" The woman cried and cried with pain laced like a noose around her voice.
"What.. What do you mean gone?" Asked Diego, " You mean like she went somewhere ? Right ?"
" No Diego. She's ... Oh god ." The woman sobbed some more. "Car accident ... Drunk driver ... He killed my baby !!! He killed my baby !!!"
"Wait no, no Vilu can't be dead. This is a joke right ? It's not funny."
"It's not a joke. My baby's gone." Said the woman sounding exasperated.
Diego slammed the phone down. He stared at nothing for a moment as the information repeated itself in his brain. But he couldn't comprehend it, couldn't even begin to process it.
Her mom's probably confused. He just saw Violetta yesterday, and she was as alive as ever. His girlfriend isn't dead, she couldn't be. There's simply no way. Right ?
